When something becomes common in all names - it gets dropped, nothing out of the usual.

or like me Zulfiqar Ali.

Zulfiqar = spine cleaver = literal meaning, but its also a Maasoom holy sword - gifted by Allah. so technically all the people who have cursed me are hell bound.

Ali - literal meaning supreme - but its also the name of a holy person - and also a siffat of Allah, in my case its the name of my generation. - so everyone who says bad about this name has surely sinned.

there is a very small answer to this over enthusiastic query of yours .

1. dropping or shortening is not a loop hole in the islamic code of conduct . but in an individual code of conduct, and the answer is simple , follow sunnah , and address people with the best names possible . with respect. or u will keep running round and round in circle for the correct formula.
   there is no obligation anywhere on this issue , so if still if your heart is not satisfied , go the taqwa way and do it the sunnah way .
   
2. theres a hadith . i'll write in english the arabic.

Innamal Aamaal o ' Binniyatte
' actions are judged by intentions '

and the intentions are well known to the lord . so there is no point if a person has cursed a person named ALI , he becomes hell bound for cursing a holy personality . intentions are well known to Allah (swt) , and all actions are bound to be judged upon intentions.

I'm sorry, but this is just ridiculous.

You're actually insulting God by saying that stuff like this relates to him, affects him in any way or that God will punish us for this.

I will still call it Haleem, knowing full well that i'm not stupid enough to confuse the name with anything to do with God or that God actually cares or is insulted about such trivial and preposterous things.

Considering your name it should also need to be read, written complete as ذولفقار علي to get the complete meaning of it. You can add another علي to keep the family name. Do forgive me if the suggestion is not appreciated as your curse will make me hell bound.

Ali is not my family name it is the name of my current generation.

hmm - so to be technically perfect in all islamic way we should have a formula for naming someone - name is a unique id - it will become pretty useless if everyone shared the same specially if the formula says to put a standard value in it. We would then most probably end up with "adjective and verb names"

Anyway I have seen a real bad and funny situation at an airport in KSA, our Pakistani bhai (traveller in this case) was stalling the immigration line in this way.

His name was "Khalid bin Waleed"
his dad's name was something Usman Ahmed.

The immigration person was arguing that its not correct - your father's name should be waleed. lol... hahahahaha

SO back to track - how can some urdu speaking people condemn that the word haleem is bad and be called daleem sourcing it from dalya (which is urdu) - what these brain dead people forgot is that this dish AND ITS NAME CAME FROM IRAQ - where people speak arabic - the same language the entire Qoran is scripted in.

Stop and think for a moment without the rosy glasses.

Its name did not come from iraq. It is purely a dish of the sub continent.

ROFL , that was an interesting situation as the Saudi officer was technically correct as his position .

now , personally off the rosy glasses , i absolutely agree , that some people do go overboard in some matters where there is no clear cut order provided , a very few people do this , and then the entire school of scholars are put on trial , in fact sometimes , they even put Islam on trial itself .
no scholar can provide a Fatwa on this issue , as there is NO direct clear cut order or incident in quran hadith and sunnah.
in a similar issue/manner . so this Haleem and daleem thing is overboard itself .
its a good thing if you can follow , with absolutely no sin if u are unable to .

and plus , i have already said it , there is no formula for naming someone , but if a person is inclined towards the taqwa part and feels some sort of disrespect to the lord in naming a person by the name of Allah , ( although NOT obligatory) he can put Abdul . he is NOT doing a sin if he is not.
this is all about it , and no there is no formula , that we may even look for it .
the hadith i told is posted above me and that says it all very clearly .
