Another update. Front right brake has been cleaned up, de-greased and fitted. Tomorrow, Insha Allah will be going for a road test. If all goes well, I will be taking out the front leaf spring. Once again, since, the job will be essentially similar to the rear spring (page 1 through 3), I will not cover it in great detail. Perhaps I?ll just post before and after pics of the front springs.

In the holy month of Ramzan pace of work is a bit slow. My energy level falls off sharply after Zohar time. So what ever I plan for myself has to be done in the morning time:)

Car was road tested and all seems well. However, my plan to take the front springs has changed. I have now decided to continue with the shock absorbers plus brake jobs - the rear ones. Change of plans is based on two reasons; one is that properly functioning rear shocks and brakes will have a more immediate impact on the drivability of the car as opposed to fixing gaiters on the front springs. Secondly doing the springs is a heavy job best left for after Ramzan:)

With the need to find new brake linings, I went about the local markets looking for them. When new, the lining size for my car is 12" dia X 1-1/2"wide X 1/4"THK. All the lining I found were thicker than 1/4". Plus I could not find the copper rivets needed to fit the linings. While browsing the net looking for someone to supply these linings from overseas, I learned that there is special tool needed to fold over the rivet properly:RIVETING. Since we are talking about the brakes of the car no short cuts are acceptable.

So the final status is I have ordered this punch, a set of linings for the car and copper rivets to secure the linings to the shoes:)

Dont know about your city but in Karachi this lining and rivet job would be cakewalk, the 1/4 inch linings were plenty and the super oldschool type brake relining shops (yes they did exist even the early 2000s) had the correct pilot drills for the linings and also the required copper rivets. They would take about half hour for 4 shoes.

I cannot even begin to explain how agricultural this place is compared to Karachi.

Same stuff in the drum brake of your Kawasaki's back brake. In the old days it used to be mainly asbestos fibre. Asbestos use has been banned due to its carcinogenic properties around 1973 and replaced by aramid. So I am guessing it is aramid.

Last few days, I have been regularly using the car for odd shopping trips here and there.

I have found the braking and stopping to be good under normal braking but the groaning noises from the brakes has returned. Sounds like a railway engine coming to a stop :). It is a bit embarrassing so I keep a very light foot on the brakes trying to avoid making brake noses while slowing down but that leads to long stopping distances.

So, now the next improvement will be new brakes linings. I am waiting for the new linings I ordered from UK to arrive (Insha Allah by Monday as per the information on the website). The tool to fit the rivets will arrive much later (by the end of next week) as it was mailed via normal post. I'll do a re-lining job for all four brakes once all the parts are here.

If all the ordered parts are correct, the re-lining job is not too hard. A matter of drilling/chiselling out old rivets, separating the lining from the shoes, placing the new lining, aligning the rivet holes, putting in the new rivets and punching them to secure the new lining to the shoes. Finally the new linings have to have chamfers filed at both ends to ensure nose free operation.

Well, the brake linings and the rivets arrived today. Picture below. Now I have to wait the special tool to arrive that spreads the rivets. Until then I can't do any work on the brakes. Only fly in the ointment is that the rivets I ordered were supposed to be copper. What has been sent is brass :S. Certainly not as good as copper (softer) compared to brass (harder)

i have a couple of different size roll pin punches in my tool box. do u think those will be suitable for riveting job? what size are the rivets?

Arsalan Sb. Thank you so much for your kind offer. The roll punch needed for spreading the brake rivets is not one of the normal ones (I too have a full set of chisels and roll punches). Here is a picture of the jig used for doing the re-lining job

If one does not have the jig, then the next best thing is to use a punch intended for doing re-lining such as the one shown below:

I will be very surprised if you have the punch in the above picture:)

I bought such a punch a long time ago - it was in a surplus stock bin and only had german writing on its package which was a very old but sturdy box. It did mention the work "bremen" - brakes on it.

Dont know where its lying now - paid 1 pound for it.

Trust you to have something obscure like this in your tools Point is, if a job has to be done right, the right tool has to be used. Mine is on its way. My old VW Golf rear brake shoes were also like yours - linings riveted to the bases. I never used the punch for them as I could hand over the shoes for lining replacement. I usually buy oddball tools for reasons I forget.

The old shops that did the lining had this and called it "makhi" wali punch.

A man cannot have enough tools just like a woman cannot have enough shoes.

If my punch doesn’t arrive, I will have to search high and low for (1) a punch from the old tool shops in the old part of town or (2) look for an old school brake guy who can do the job to my specifications.

Eyelet dies and punching sets are easy to find here.

if nothing else work, i suppose an oversized steel ball bearing should do the job as well.
@xulfiqar, i think we all buy tools just because. we have no reason for them and women will never understand that. like e.g. i am totally banned (begum and amma) from going to the tools section in metro or to any tool shop.

Nadeem Sb. I have the eyelet punch (got that for fixing the eyelets to the spring gaiters). That one is totally different to the one I need. However I am sure in an industrial city like Faisalabad, such things would be easily available. Anyway normal mail takes 14 working days to get here from UK. Item was sent on 9th Jul. which means it will be here after 22nd July. So until then I will sit and wait:)
