To be honest, I hadn't really given thought to a roll cage in the Impala. Although with close to 600 bhp on tap, I can definitely see how that'd be a good idea.
On the other hand, I had given some thought to the suspension. Since we're going to do a great deal of modifying with this car, it's a no-brainer for the suspension to remain unaltered. My initial thoughts were of Surf / TLC axles, with their associated disc brakes. These discs should be heavy-duty enough for a car which will have as much momentum (mass x velocity) as the Impala. Given that they're readily available, too, sweetens the deal.
Again, because of the enormous increase in power, it'd be vital to keep body roll and lateral sway to a minimum, so sway bars and anti-roll bars, or panhard bars are a very likely addition. I'm also resigned to the fact that this will never be a nimble, deftly manoeuverable car and its forte will always be straight line acceleration. Stiffer springs and shocks, are thus, virtually essential. I also see the likelihood of having to reinforce the chassis, by means of some cross members, to lend it greater structural strength and stiffness. A arms and ends and mountings will have to be looked at very closely, too. I like the look of the Hotchkis suspension. Something that definitely bears closer investigation.
Once more...many thanks for your valued advice.
