Wonderful! Thank you...I'll get in touch with them, post haste. As soon as we seriously start work on the engine. Realistically speaking...this should be over the coming weekend.
The guys says they do have a stock of Buick parts as well but you'd need to tell him the specific part you're looking for, he looked a bit Poker faced when I asked him about the trim parts so I would assume he doesn't have them but he said he may have headlights and he does have engine parts but again he wouldn't confirm till he know what exactly you were looking for
That the engine inside the Impala is a Buick 455, is STILL merely speculation, for now...although I'm inclined to trust the judgement of the gentleman who advised me about it. When we enter into the start / remake / rebuild process for the engine, we'll come to unravel any mysteries surrounding it. Only then, will we actually be able to discover what ails the engine (if anything at all), and what parts are required to remedy it.
Interesting conundrum with regards to the engine, had it been any Chevy engine I would have been inclined to advise you to keep it, however being a Buick in a Chevy makes it a tough decision, while a resto-mod is an interesting option and a practical one too in the long run, it can be equally taxing unless you do everything afresh, i.e. engine, drivetrain (ideal buy them mated together), diffs, brakes (complete including a more efficient booster with disc brakes setup), suspension and even smaller things like the radiator and fuse box
On the other hand the Buick is already in there, must have been running at some point in time, will probably have an uncomparable engine note to it, the balance hangs in whether the engine installed in your car is the detuned version or not
The jury is still out, on this aspect. On one hand, let's face it...the engine inside the Impala IS a V8 (regardless of origin). It IS a ginormous beast. At some point it WAS running. It probably DOES have a terrifying sound. And probably CAN be made to run fine AND look absolutely stunning within the engine bay, with little effort. On the other hand, any catastrophic failures of vital parts in the engine WILL be VERY difficult to fix and/or modify. If indeed it IS a Buick 455, and if it IS of the 1971 to 1976 vintage, then it WON'T have the grunt I was hoping for. In which case, I'd certainly want to swap it...even at the unattractiveness of a Jaapani Injun in an Amreekan Gaddi.
The second point to consider is the cost, if money is no object then chuck it out (but DO NOT dispose of it just yet) and put in a Toyota (nothing lesser than a V8 will suffice, MUST be a V8 if I were the restorer) that way you can send me the Holley Carb since you won't need it any more
Just kidding about that...
I'm philosophical about the Money Vs. Passion argument. Money will ALWAYS matter, since very few (if any) amongst us, own oil wells. That being said, I'm certainly not averse to spending money where it's due. When it comes to stuff like this, what needs to be spent MUST be spent. That is my basic understanding of shaukiya rebuilds.
IF I do indeed decide to change the engine for a Toyota V8 (probably a 1UZ-FE), I've promised to give the engine (free of cost) to a friend who'd asked me for it. The same holds true with the Holley Carb. IF it's not required by me, you're more than welcome to have it, as a token of appreciation from one enthusiast to the other.
On the other hand the pics show a pretty decent engine, and restoring it may not be as exorbitant as the detailed transplant I mentioned above. And if you do opt for the transplant, please do consider the level of detail I've skimmed through as sooner or later (from experience and lots of hair loss) you will have to replace all of this stuff so might as well do it right at the start.
Agreed. Totally. If I DO opt to change the powerplant, it will encompass everything. The works. Reservoirs, bottles, boosters, servos, fuse boxes, wiring, sumps, tranny, diffs, axles, disc brakes...everything. No half-measures, at all.
On the lighter side...in answer to what Saad wrote, earlier...I'm OBVIOUSLY going to start work on another book, too...titled: "1000 Things You MUST NEVER DO To Your Rustbucket Impala"
