WIN! It feels great that people still appreciate and keep interest in Beetle's. 115km/hr on a bone stock 1200cc air-cooled VW is an awesome achievement.

BTW, how fast can the stock 1200cc motor really go?

can I chime in, Ive put my 1302 on the highways a little too much - and for sure it could keep up with any sort of traffic easily, its the boxer engine characteristic midrange torque and easy rider gearbox ratios.

A great solution at every stop was to leave the engine at idle with the engine cover popped open - she could use all the atm air she wanted to cool her engine.

Thats the highest speed that Patina yet has documented ever since I have owned her. But I'm certain that she has been there already and even beyond that reading on the M2 when I brought her home from Islamabad when I had bought her in March 2011.

But to tell you the fact, her pedal still had little displacement to achieve this speed as there was lot more space b/w pedal and the floor that was there to be used while she was caught on speedgun at 115kmph.

I wouldn't dare flooring it completely coz I love her too greatly to suffer any major injuries than I care for all the money I have put into her or the previous year's labour hours I have put in.

And while at it, I must tell you that her potential is too great as by far I have not put any part on her save the few maintenance parts which I used on motor clean-up DIY. So I am pretty sure she can do a lot better in terms of performance once she has some new parts on her motor/after being restored completely.

From what I think it can do around 125-130km/h at max, what do you say? Sorry for going off-topic but can you install a dual port intake manifold to the 1200cc?

Yes, over-speeding is way too dangerous. Let it be any car of any manufacturer for that matter.

Why not? Your experience and knowledge helps us in a lot of ways and I thank you for that.

One odd thing I've heard from a few people is that the engine gets over-heated when you drive it on long routes, I asked why but they couldn't give me a proper answer.

What makes people think that?

Seems like I have yet another story to tell some of my friends who profess "times have changed" when it comes to discussing an Old School car's potential. Hats off to you once again for making a successful travel story!

Baseless assumption. I drove Patina 190km straight from the middle of desert without a stop over to my home doing 110kmph on my way back the other day. When I parked her in my porch her motor was first thing that I rushed to check and trust me it wasn't anything hotter than just normal as it would have been after it had been driven for a few kilometers.

And mind you, 65s dont come with slotted decklids!

Keep the engine bay/bell housing seal on, both in good shape, keep the fan belt properly adjusted and ensure that intake manifold is all cleaned up and you would be fine even if you drive your bug for a 1000km on highway speeds. Take my word for it.

I would also like a proper answer from such people - "engine itnaa garam hojata hai ke aag lag jatee hai" -- hahahaha

Its all hearsay - if your cooling tins, seals etc are in place, the mechanicals adjusted good - clean inlet, perfect exhaust - Nothing will run happier than an air cooled VW on the highway.

If you think this engine will heat up - you need to see a turbocharged aircooled porsche - that engine holds 12 litres engine oil, huge fan, massive cooling tins, a fiery hot turbo and an intercooler in the engine bay, still it remains nice and cool on the highways - even under lead foot action.

Its like someone driving with a bad radiator and cap, rusted engine etc then complaining that the engine overheated.

Here are the bits i pulled out of another fan shroud for you. They are in far better condition with minimal surface rust. I feel bad that you had to go thru the exercise of de-rusting the first set when this was hidden away in my stash.

I'll see how I can send these across at the earliest along with the thermostat bellows and linkage.

Our minds were clear, we were not there for the rally. We were there for something greater. Our motive was far bigger than just seeing some latest model 4x4s specialized monsters floating over sands at crazy speeds.
