@Reezvaan..if you say so...I would have left the original tar board alone. A properly tuned bug with no worn bearings, transmission mounts in good nick , properly inflated tires should have the noise, within reasonable limits. If you still find a rattle look under the seat...it would be one of Abdul Haadi's toys.

About the under the seat remark, it reminds me that one of the seat retainer spring is missing. And here is the pic of the only one that I have installed;

You should be able to find that quite easily at Zaheers in Rwp. or even with one of the dentors. They usually have tins full of these. I am sending some German window channels so hopefully the rattle part should be taken care of.
Speaking of children’s toys...my daughter had a toy piano the kind that has some pre-programmed tunes and is annoying like hell after 24 hours (so if you have something against the parents, gift it to one of their children) On our way home from Lahore it fell in the foot well behind the drivers seat when she dozed off. The heater was on in the car and we were cruising. By the time we got home the piano looked more like a clown’s mask with a grin...the blow from the heater melted it!!! That’s how effective the VW heater can be if working properly. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" /><o:p></o:p>

 You guys are lucky. These seat springs are very hard to find in Karachi. At the scrapyard they hardly turn up. Its obvious that they've been thrown out by our enterprising mech bhais :S who think they are there for no reason.......like so many things....... ( my 'nuts' theory applies here too :D )

Almost every kabaria and VW mechanic has tins full of these. You just have to be willing to do the 'chanti' yourself or pay him extra to make a set fro you. The main groups are the 13 mm that are used to tighten the fenders and the smaller 10mm ones that hold the door mechanism. The 17 mm nuts hold the engine and the two D bolts that go on top are of different length but again use 17 mm nuts. The smaller screws that fasten the engine tin can also be found or you can use the 10 mm bolts for their ease of using a socket. Most usually have the name KAMAX on the head.

 Now we are really getting into the dubs nuts :P

 At the local kabarias in Karachi, genuine hardware is hard to get. The body bolts are never taken off, as the cars are scrapped using chisels and hammers :'(

 Some time back, I asked the scrapper to get the original body mount bolts off a 67 ( a very clean car, Parsi owned......I shouted till hoarse for a rescue but no one came forward in time)......I paid extra :-$ to the guy who actually cuts the cars and he salvaged quite a few clean bolts and washers. 

On my last trip I looked for engine hardware for the 68 engine we are currently rebuilding but came up with few bits and for those too the guy was charging like hell. Each batch of around 10 to 12 random nuts a hundred rupees. More for the bolts.

Coming to the core of this discussion, there are a few areas where the original bolts are crucial. Topping this list are the Pressure Plate mounting bolts, six in all. You need the 'Kamax 8G' ones here.

speaking of nuts and bolts - the bolts and screw market on Lawrence road in Karachi is a mine for such items, you surely can find all sorts of quality German hardware, its just that you need to know the dia, length, thread pitch and bolt head, a day to spare and a good set of gloves or you would have the most greasiest hands on earth

I recently visited the Lawrence Road market looking for a couple of steering universal joints but came up with nothing. I did search the whole market end to end, twice that day. I was very disappointed.

From this experience, Id safely say that I dont have the nuts to go searching for nuts there :P

Zulfiqar, when did you visit the market?? Im assuming it mustve been a few years back?? If not then maybe its worth a peek.

Probably I would get it buffed later and de-rust it from the inside with grit sandpaper. Here are a few shots from before trying kerosene and after:

How I would treat this hubcap.....

On the back side clean off excess dirt/loose rust.......sand it clean......apply rust converter and leave for 24 hours......hand brush paint with epoxy primer, either grey or red oxide....let dry.......apply a top coat or two of any plastic emulsion paint (the kind used on doors and windows around homes)......let dry. Before you paint, put a small piece of masking tape over the hub cap pulling tool holes so paint/primer would not flow thru to the outside surface.

Above method is recommended for all VW wheel caps, even brand new ones (skipping the sanding part) as rust can creep in this hidden area.

I vote against buffing this.....I think polishing by hand is better. Gentle to the finish or whats left of it.

Don't forget to clean all debris, dirt and accumulated grime in the inside bottom of the door. You can even use a garden hose to clean out and ensure that the water runs free thru the drain slot. Most doors rust at the bottom as the drain holes are clogged.

Now we have to do something about the ugly stub of an antenna you have in there. I'll see if I can pick up an antenna or just an antenna block off plate that comes in chrome with seals. at a swap meet.

I think you are better off sealing the RHS antenna hole. VWs came with this on the LHS. Im guessing someone punched this to install the antenna he got. 

How does the corresponding LHS area look???

Someone asked me today, after going through the new goodies/stuff on the thread why was I spending too much on these goodies when I am not even putting these goodies on Patina and just storing them all. My answer to this question is that you don't head with a preservation/restoration unless you have everything you need in your stash to complete the project once its started.

Let it be a "how to do" tip for all those who are restoring/preserving their VWs that please dont start the project unless you have everything you need to complete the project (Lets learn from the experience of the veterans like @nmshaikh, @AsadIshaque, @Storm, who have been waiting for YEARS to collect all the parts they needed for their restoration projects before they even started the project).

Many of us commit this mistake that they just head into a restoration without giving a second thought what would happen to their project if the part needed is not available at the time when it is utterly important to go on to the project car.

This is THE REAL DIFFERENCE between an amateur restoration and an experienced restoration and one only learns this tip after having had an experience of an amateur restoration. I had one in 2001 when I restored my 1970 1500cc deluxe. It was my first ever car and a first ever restoration. I have learned a lot since then, thanks to veterans from the VWCOP.

So be wary, DO NOT start/head on with a restoration unless you have all the parts you would need to put up a restoration where you do justice to the word "RESTORATION", be it a VW restoration or any other car for that matter.

Look around PWs only......so many cars stripped to the bare bones with absolutely no battle plan marked out!! Look at the guy who threw all windows out and now not having window rubbers.......
