There is some tough cacked dirt/grease all under the car especially at all the suspension details which makes me believe that never in her life before, Patina has received any kind of suspension work/cleaning. Its a tough job especially with the car standing over the wooden blocks and not the traditional "dug" where it would be lot easier to reach all the nooks and corners.

I have to clean this caked dirt/grease in order to capture the true picture of the state of the suspension details so that wherever necessary, I could choose for powder coating/paint as well as change of suspension bits.

It has already been decided (and most of the bits/parts have also been sourced/ordered) to give Patina a complete suspension change over.

In my opinion the attention to these areas can wait. The best time would be when the engine is out of the car and the tranny is being swapped. The rebuilt tranny should be dolled up as it would be easier and more practical do do so with it outside the car. The extra room (with the engine and tranny out) that would be available to complete the task would be a big plus.

I cant agree no more but then we can not deny the fact that with all the rust on the wheel hubs, the moment I would mount the wheels back which would have been given a clear inside coat, this rust would start eating the inner clear coat of the paint and since there is still quite a bit of time until I get the engine unmounted to do all what has been described above, I think there are fat chances that clear coat would be eaten up by this rust with the moonsoon season coming in.

you don't plan on driving the car in the rain ..are you?

Its said that swing axle setup is more prone to a wheel tuck when you try speedy lane changes/take on sharp curves on the freeways/highways on high speeds as compared to IRS.

I had read somewhere that the best way to eliminate the wheel tuck possibility on swing axle cars, was to add axle limiting straps/z-bars/camber compensators.

How frequent is the use of these measures there in Canada/US? And how conveniently are these available at swap meets etc.?

In my years of driving Volkswagens of all vintages I have never encountered any issues but I too have read about the issues and the available remedial accessories. I have driven a bug in excess of 120 km / hr for long distances and that included lane changes and cornering..ok maybe not cornering at 120 km but without reducing speed significantly. I think more of it comes from 'knowing' your bug , having confidence in its abilities and identifying its limitations. There are things your 50 ish years old bug can do and there are things it can't. The things it cannot do, I suggest you don't even try regardless of the modifications you can throw in....just buy a sporty piece of engineering

I have heard of the modifications / accessories that you mention but do not have a first hand experience of the improvement in performance, if any, they bring. I have not seen any being sold at the shows either (or maybe I wasn't looking in the right places)
