If all the willing members of VWCOP are willing to travel to NorthAmerica we can find everyone a vehicle in this price range (even cheaper) and then take a caravan of beetles back. I guess even if the cars are confiscated at customs in Pakistan we can still get them cheaper when they are auctioned off.

...and a lot of fun is guaranteed, regardless of the outcome.

Can ANYONE find out from their cousins / neighbour / uncle / distant relative who has any knowledge of customs how we can legally get a VW of this vintage (say an early 60's) into Pakistan?

That'll be great! My uncle is a custom officer, I never thought of asking him about importing a classic/vintage to Pakistan. I'll ask him whenever I meet him for sure, get the completely 411 on it.

He told me one time, that a young lady whos father passed away out of country had a '62-'63 Fintail Mercedes-Benz W110 which was the first car he ever bought, she wanted to import it to Pakistan and keep it with her in her fathers native land. When it reach Port Qasim here in Karachi, the custom officers thought that this was a joke and who would want to import such a old car.

At first they said that you can't get the vehicle cleared through the port. But, then the young lady said no and requested to please get her fathers car cleared off of the port, she even started to cry she also stated that she would pay whatever it takes to get the car cleared off of the port.

In the end, the custom officers decided to clear the car off of the port, the young lady winded up paying more than what the car was worth. But atleast she got the car which was in her opinion priceless.

If you ask me, I would want VWCOP to import a Split Window RAGTOP instead of anything like this one.

We have every Type-1 here in Pakistan, what we dont, is a Split Window RAGTOP.

We have Split Window Hard Top (@mohsinikram's Spilt Window HT), Oval Window Rag Top (@nmshaikh's Oval RT), Verts (@nmshaikh's Vert), Ovals (Aminullah Sb's Oval), Square Window Rag Top (@AsadIshaque's Sqaurewindow RT) and all else, but a Split Window RT.

That is my dream Bug! I was referring to the '65 because it'll cost quite less as compared to the Split Window RagTop. Those things are priceless in my opinion, the more you pay for them is less.

Everyone of us, the VDubbers, has a dream bug but unfortunately as far as bugs are concerned (here in Pakistan) the bigger the dream, the smaller the chances are of it getting materialized.

If you ask me I would want to drive/own any bug at all, but only if its "a bug". No modifieds!

Trust me so many of us (VDubbers) have had gems lying in their stables but then they didn't acknowledge their worth and left them to rot. As a result most of those gems were either scrapped or were rotten (and ultimately lost).

Whatever were left, were acquired long ago by the true lovers of the bugs, when you and I didn't even know what an OVAL/SPLIT really was or what it really meant.

Very true indeed, just like in Shershah a couple of years back every other day a Beetle use to get butchered. Now, it's a once in a blue moon act.

I have actually witnessed an oval being hacked to pieces with axes in Bilal Gunj Lahore. There was a time when Asif Kabariya has dozens of W decklids rotting in the open on the roof of his shop. There was a time when used carbs were imported by sackfuls and you could pick and choose.....Unfortunately while all of this was happening I could only afford a Honda CD 175

Speaking of pain...can you imagine what it was like when my mother called a rehri wala that goes around the streets collecting scrap, old teen dabba...and gave him my stash of super clean rust free fenders, decklids, hoods and I don't remember what else.... All I remember is I took a few days off work to try track the bloody rehri wala without success..

So much more to all the mothers...mine is no different. Have had I not kept the store locked (as a precaution-where all my stash is placed), I am sure I would have been doing the same...lashing after the rehri walas and all.

Many people would be ready to give their body parts to have such rust free fenders/decklids (I being the one) for their beloved Vdubs.

B/w I hope those goodies landed in some VDubber's hands at least there would be chances that he might have given them a new life by putting them onto a new Vdub(s).

I have no clue where they went...I spend days looking for the guy but seems he was an out of towner or left in a hurry with my stash as I visited all of their temporary and semi permanent godowns where they store the stuff they bring in from all over town... I hope too it went to some vee dubber as opposed to have ended as scrap metal. I remember there was a complete set of fenders, hood and decklid from a 77 german bug that was scrapped by Haji kabaria in Sultan ka Khoh, a couple of trannys, complete brake drums and what not.....*** ***..:'(:'(

At least now you know how do they operate and how do they store the collected items (Kidding)

Its been couple of months since I am on to convincing the guy (who happens to be a US Returned Engineer) to let it go to a VDubber who could save her but he insists that he would restore her himself sometime soon (which I know he wouldn't - as he hasn't for last few yrs since his return). Its Pearl White as well. A pic of her was posted on the VWCOP thread a while ago by me;

You can change your pitch to suggesting you'll help him restore the car for him. Once he realizes it is so much work he might decide favourably towards selling or at least the car gets saved in the process.
