Some slow skinning of the front hood. This hood was put onto Patina replacing her original pitted hood from my stash which added lot of character to her profile. In no way this is going to stay on when Patina gets her panel beating job done along with the paint job. But it was real fun skinning all the metal deep rust on this hood today as I needed to do some practice de-rusting panels using the angle grinder, first with the wire brush and then with the 80 sandpaper and following by some manual grinding with 320 sandpaper:

after restoring all the electrical and mechnical parts will you repaint all the car or use as it is ? and what about the engine , is in genunine and in good condition or need overhaulling ?

your beetle would be considerably quiet, but the OE tar boards had air pockets in the cardboard to absorb vibrations (sound) and the tar being heavy makes for a barrier - problem - it stinks

True, VW kept a note of everything while they were working on sound deadening VWs and specifically came up with materials which were super effective.

Oh about the stinking thing, the material I used seem to stink too as I could smell "shoes" in the cabin today when I opened the door to look for the keys which were left inside the ignition last night but we'll see with time, there is high possibility that it stays but a slim chance too that it is overcome by the BUG SCENT which is so characteristic to all bugs.

that scent is actually the coconut husk filler of the seats - my VW also smelled of it, and its very refreshing IMO compared to the stinky plastic stench of new japanese cars.

strangely my W124 benz also has that coconut scent.

helo dear , i spoted one pic out of your thread , can you tell me what is the purpose of that lever ? i guess it is to jam one wheel so that car can make tight turns in very less space ? isnt it ? ,,,,,,,,,,,,i see such hand breaking system in trackers ,

are you seriuos about this ? I hope you dont mess her up in sand ? no doubt they made it that way in 30s but we must see on other side too : she an old lady now!

I guess its time to put Patina to a real test. We (VWCOP) have been talking about arranging a Desert Rally here on VWCOP Thread and I have noticed that lot many of us are quite reluctant when it comes to take their bugs to sand beaten terrain such as in a desert.

The only way I could help them with making a decision in favour of joining hands with rest of the participants/adventure enthusiasts, is to take Patina to the chenab river bank (which is nothing but a sand beaten terrain) and show them all that even a stock bug like Patina with as little a motor as 1200cc could do it with ease. Not to mention that she rides on Stock size 5.60x15 General tires which are in no way built for sand hoovering.

I dunno but why VW enthusiasts are all missing the point that when Volkswagen was testing their design in late 1930s, there were no formal roads in Germany so they designed Volkswagen for semi offroad terrain in the first place and thus I dont see that these little wonder cars cant perform on sand.
