1998 corolla automatic transmission issues

Aoa. I have a 1998 Indus corolla with a 5a-fe engine and an automatic transmission. The transmission started malfunctioning and i thought of getting it replaced. Now i am thinking about switching to the manual transmission. Would it be okay to do so?

Initially to gear change nahi karti, aur 80 90 km/h pe ja k downshift karne lagg jati hai! Got it checked 4 5 jaga se. Mechanics ne yehi kaha hai that replace hoga.

Ek mechanic ne ye bhi suggest kiya tha to get a double solenoid automatic gear. Dont know what he meant by that.

Kindly suggest k main auto pe hi rahun ya manual pe switch kar jaun. Iskay ilawa i do like getting some performance out of the car.

U mean when u start to drive in D.The rpm is going up but not gaining much speed

It does gain speed aswell but it does not change the gear to 2nd

Changed it twice to be sure k atf ka masla na ho

you have a full hydraulic gearbox? - if yes, you need to contact a transmission mechanic, the speed governor in your transmission is probably clogged due to old ATF. (it can be removed externally)

If the speed governor is clean, the feed limit valve in the valve body is partially stuck.

Does the transmission ever act stupid and never want to move even in D position in morning?

If i move to manual! It costs me 1 lac with all the material and fittings. If i switch to auto again, the gear is approx. 50 60 thousand

I have got each and everything checked. Sab ne har kisam ka kam kar k dekh liya hai! Sirf checking and Atf k chakaron main i have already spent 15 20 thousand. Even the mechanic of toyota has asked me to replace it.

You see i have had this car since 1998, i am the first owner, in 2018 i got the engine replaced as the company fitter one was diesel and wo 5 lac chal chuka tha. Now cash is not an issue, i just dont yet feel like replacing the whole engine, so i wanted an opinion that should i switch to manual for less maintainance? Or should i stick to auto and get it replaced! And if auto, than are there any varients or an auto transmission that work better?

its not an ATF issue, your transmission is acting in a way what we call in the industry "suffering from a stroke" - this is due to debris in the valve body valves, wormtracks or even the governor passages.

Did your mechanics actually do something like remove the governor? valvebody? or test the unit with a pressure gauge? or check the pressure cable (maybe someone broke its outer sleeve and now its always tight). Is the O/D wiring correct? does your transmission have the cold start lockout wiring?

there are quite a lot of things to check - and to check them stop going to bicycle mechanics and get to a real transmission mechanic/repairsman.
