1G-FE ENGINE REBUILD. Tappets left loose by mechanic?

So the timing belt broke of my Mark II 1G-FE resulting in a cracked head and broken piston

Long story short opted to have the engine re-built as did not want the car to have the 'engine changed' badge to it resulting in decreased re-sale value

New head, piston and corresponding parts along with a very heavy bill of approx Rs 100,000 later, I am satisfied with how the engine runs except for one part

There is the clicking tappety sound to which the Ustaad has advised will go away as I keep on driving the car

He's like if he tightened the Tappets during the re-build then the engine would start missing and not run smooth

Please can @Xulfiqar and other knowledgeable brothers advise if there is anything I can do at this stage to fix the tappety sound?

Car runs fine as good as before no complaints but just don't want the engine to fail again and me having to cough up another hard earned 1 lakh rupees

Car runs fine as good as before no complaints but just don't want the engine to fail again and me having to cough up another hard earned 1 lakh rupees

If you want its long life so do use the correct things as specified in manual.

Have you poured water or coolent?
Which Oil grade used?
Thermostat installed?
Fan auto?

And i think you should get the tappets correctly tighten according to manual.

1GFE uses shims on the lifter buckets - how loose are they set now? too loose will cause noise and performance loss. Also make sure that the mechanic has set the scissor gear correctly - if its not installed correct - the engine will sound clacky.

Dear Sir @Xulfiqar. I am not sure how loose they are set. All he said to me was that he left them very slightly loose and that the clickity noise will go away as I keep driving it and the pistons set in better. All in all I am fully satisfied with its performance - its way better then before the re-build I reckon but just the clickity sound concerns me. Am I safe just to ignore it and drive as normal?

1gfe is a very silent engine and the only click you should be hearing is the injectors firing. (Its a rythmic clicky music type sound)

Otherwise it is as silent as a tomb when fully warm, if your engine is making tapping and clicky noises, firstly make sure the camshaft scissor gears are correctly installed, and secondly measure the actual tappet clearance and then post here.

There is no such thing as tapping stopping as pistons wear in - by any rationale such act ends up with even louder noise.

@rajaatta has probably dismantled more 1GFE than most would even care to own in their lifetime.

Thank you Sir @Xulfiqar . I doubt the mechanic who re-built the engine will oblige me with this. Would you be able to recommend a reliable mechanic in Karachi where I can take the car and have them check the Camshaft Scissor gears and tappet clearance?

The engine we are talking here is 1G beams.
So the mechanic has set loose the tappets because according to his theory the engine parts will settle in is completely wrong.
Once the new valves and valve guides are set in and the valves are properly seated and grinded there is no such need to keep them loose.
I prefer 0.005 of the inch on intake valves and 0.007 inch on exaust valve as I rebuild my own 1g engines.
This in first place enhances the performance and low end torque along with minimal engine noise.
The valves are then readjusted after 20000kms.

Here you should immediately ask the mechanic to provide you with the valve clearence data.
As per my experience the valves if leaved till
0.018 - 0.027 on 1G doesn't makes the sound and if it's loose then that it will make the condition worse for the valves and camshafts themself.
So ask the mechanic to leave his Desi jugari science and set the clearence on dead cold engine to
0.006 inch on intake and 0.008 inch on exaust.
And ask him to do this by inverted cam lobes on each cylinder with TDC.
If not adjusted like this it will be a hell lot noiser.

AOA humair bhai should have had all the seals replaced with Toyota genuine parts as well because I have your car now and it leaked oil like crazy had to get all seals replaced with Toyota genuine seals.
