@silk: 1KZ (50 to 100k) is much cheaper than the 5L (100 to 150k) with prices varying between locally used and fresh kabuli imported pieces. KZs are also widely and cheaply available as they are being taken out of cars which are convereted top petrol/cng. 5L is a somewhat rare engine to find.

On most counts 1KZ is probably a better engine than the 5L, though people who have driven the 5L swear by it. You would need a Hilux gearbox to fit it in a CJ7 because the Prado one has different rear diff alighnment. There are two variations in Hilux gearboxes R151 (cheaper, more powerful) and R150 (more expensive, more ful economy) and both sit in well between the 1KZ and original CJ7 diffs.

Would you also care to expand on the cost factor. More info on the pricing of 2L-TE(prado) and 3L units will be appreciated. Also, as far as numbers go, the 3L and 5L are pretty much on the same level in terms of power and torque. What makes the 5L a keeper then? I ask because i am contemplating a 2L-TE swap into my lj70 landcruiser II which currently has the 3L unit and performance i feel is quite leisurely. Also, how can one identify the gear box apart from reading off the model from the VIN plate in the engine bay, does the box itself have any markings?

The prices essentially vary between a locally used engine and a fresh kabuli imported engine. I am not sure how much 2LTs and 3L go for these days but these engines are getting rare and are possibly quite expensive (100k+). The 1KZ is reported cheaper than the 2LTE and is probably the best choice out of the lot for your swap. Its quite tricky to differentiate between the R150 and R151 gearboxes visually.

you are looking to restore a CJ7. If I were in your shoes, I would go for a 5L, or a 3L even.
1 KZ is a stronger engine. I agree with Sohaib Kiani. Still, I acknowledge my idiosyncracies.
I think a non-turbo, non-electronic, simple engine, with a little more than bare-minimum horse-power is a good option.
And if I were you, I would not be offended by Suhaib Kiani"s remarks. All he ment was to make a choice between a limited number of engines. Looking at Nissan, 6-cylinder petrol, turbo petrol, or so and so will make things complicated. No hard feelings intended.
So, other than the difference of opinion on 5L versus 1 KZ, I agree with Suhaib saheb.

IMHO - I would second Ranger of the North.

For CJs - more simpler more better. Along with 5L. 3B - 13B & 13BT would be the best for high torque , extreme power and life time durability.

3B, 13B, 13BT are very old engines, parts availablilty problem and 24 volts plus hey are extremely heavy for that car. very noisy also

I think there is no comparison between 1KZ and the L series, its at a different league. KZ is much more powerfull and tough. I am using it for the last 9 years and never had any problems. The L series are simple but have a terrible reputation for busting cylinder heads on motorways. Nearly all my friends with 3 or 2L in Prados or Surfs have had problems.
I think you should go for technology instead of obsolete and outdated simplicity.

The L series had head issues by default especially the turbo ones. 1KZ's head itself is not very strong but far better then the L series no doubt. The only drawback of 1KZ I feel is that its kinda fuel thirsty being a 130-145 HP engine

Silk, Can you fit in a 1HDFTE ,the one that comes in 100 series plus its front mounted intercooler. I bet it will be more powerful and fuel efficient than most of the engines. Also measure the gearbox tunnel if the gearbox fits in
