2-Stroke Reliability?

This is a question which really hampers my mind when deciding to purchase 2 stroke engines. Will they be reliable enough?

While learning about engines in general, I found out that 2 strokes are much more unreliable. Estimated 20,000 km/- engine, before rebuilds. Of course, that is a gross oversimplification, but still, that geniunely worries me, when going to the used market for 2 strokes.

So, are they that unreliable? Any hard numbers of the life expectancy of bikes such as the GTO's, KE-175,, etc?

P.S. How can overbore pistons be found for these bikes?

2 strokes are a bit less reliable than 4 strokes yes but 2 strokes are simple engines that last a long time with simple maintenance. Rebuilding a 2 stroke is also extremely easy and you can do it yourself. Only problem is that our desi ustaads and Kharadiyas don't understand 2 strokes properly. I would suggest you to buy a 2 stroke as a side project that you can ride and tinker with without any problems.

Reliability depends on its maintenance, such as its oil-pump functionality and oil gauging. If you are in Karachi and looking for one from a reliable source, I can tell you about my friend, who is known as a GTO expert. I also kept one for many years for my regular working commute that was approximately 50 km per day.

Thanks for the reccomendation, but I live in Lahore, so not possible. How many km's did you get get out of your GTO before having a rebuild?

Lahore! It's GTO's heaven. We sourced some parts from there.

Ummm, I cannot tell you exactly but roughly it was almost 100,000 km. Not only I rode it as a regular commute but for bit for on Sundays for street racing. The only game is its cylinder that must not be slipped/over-bore. Search for a related forum and you will find people from Lahore or adjacent areas. There is also a Facebook page Lahori 2 strokers. You may get any help from there.

I am going to buy one soon for College. But truth be told, since I first rode a Prius, flooring it, I was hooked onto engines for life.

I have researched on engines, bikes, cars, everything, since then. Thats why I ask a lot.

Get a yz250 for yourself, it has a very addictive “kash” and riding experience.

Its literally like crack, but remember that a yz is also always on crack once it comes into pipe.

As long as you can get a good 2 stroke bike that was properly rebuilt by an experienced mechanic you won't have any problems and it'll be reliable for daily riding.... If you get one that was rebuilt by a jugaari ustaad then you'll be in heaps of trouble and it'll be a pain in the ass.

YZ250 is a mean machine, but parts availability is such a nuisance then one would end up regretting the purchase decision. RX135 is also a little beast, but again, parts availability is scarce. Although I would then go for FZR250, it is a 4-cylinder four stroke machine and not considered a street bike. So, for a two-stroke, I think GTO 125 is the only option left open when it comes to parts availability and reliability.

You are from Lahore; I do not have 2T engine my self but I have seen one few months back in Bilal ganj, at the warehouse of 'Ustad aslam' but he wont sell the engine only he is willing only to sell whole bike. asking was 2.5lakh for that YZ250. it was accidented and from end was suspension and wheel was kaput.
