2010 1.8 Altis pinging/knocking under load or acceleration

Intake pipes and vacuum hoses have been checked. All are apparently good.

apparently, my engine doesn't make the noise on idle.

It only makes the noise when driving. (and increased noise when more load is on car - more passengers or uphill)

Hello again everyone.

I have recently checked, there is a PENDING code of P2770 (Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Circuit High).

There is no issue in gear shift or anything.

Could this issue be linked with the pinging / knocking noise that i have mentioned earlier?

One of my friend has the same car with same engine..he also had exact same fault in his car
Same knocking especially going uphill and under load
He had to overhaul complete engine
One mechanic said that these 1.8 engines are not so relaiable as compared to 1NZ and 2NZ

Was the fuel system checked? Maybe a dirty filter or weak fuel pump?

Does it happen at the start of the journey or later on?

it happens regardless of the time. It is throughout the journey and nothing got to do with the temperature as well.

But, i doubt it is sign of a weak engine. Because like i mentioned earlier as well, sometimes the noise completely disappears. Infact, almost 1 journey per day is without this noise (matlab the noise is not there at all and the engine response is evidently a lot better and speedier at that time). but as soon as i turn the car off and re start it , the noise comes back.

Mostly i am driving with the noise. and sometimes in between the noise disappears from engine start to driving in any style and to engine stop.

There could be something as simple as one wire being loose in one of the sensors that is causing this havoc. You need to drive with a scanner attached and record the real time data feeds to see what's the problem.

Timing or fueling or air fuel ratios, etc. You might be able to pinpoint it.

im not familiar with scanners and real time data that needs to be checked . if any one could give some more specific directions on this, that would be great

I am not sure if this is to late

But heres a tip for you check your pcv valve it its stuck open your car is going to feel heavy and will knock under 2k rpm and smooth out above that rpm

Yes, the noise of intake rattling is gone. But there were other abnormal sounds also. These were confusing. I have been trying to sort these out one by one. Thank God most of these have been fixed:

1. First I got changed Timing Chain and the Tensioner, which had lost its resistance.

2. Then replaced the rattling intake manifold.

3. Engine mounts/foundations were getting weaker with cracking rubber, and were causing vibrations. So got these changed also.

4. Just found today that A/C Compressor bearing was also giving a bad sound, which couldn't be heard before.

Today when the Serpentine belt was taken off I really thanked God that the engine had gone quiet. So the last job required for now is replacement of Compressor bearing.

I took it out . Looks ok (making tick tick sound when shaking ) I cleaned it with petrol and then with pressurized air. But no difference

I have the same tik tik noise coming from 1NZ fe from the timing chain area, the rest of the engine is fine ,no problem at all except that weird sound , timing chain kitne ki li apne? new or Kabli? And which engine oil you are using? Thanks ,waiting for your reply, also if you have pics of changing the Timing chain plz share

I can see that you have made a thread for engine sound problem. So I shall give the details of Timing chain there because the OP of this thread might get offended. He has a different engine in his Altis.

the noise in my car also comes from the chain side (driver side of the engine). Still no success in diagnosing the issue. Went to a new mechanic yesterday. he said the problem could be in the auto gear. but i doubt it.

was there a noticeable difference in the noise when you changed the chain and tensioner?

Have you observed that after taking off the serpentine belt? Did the mechanic check all the pulleys?

As I mentioned in previous post that a number of problems needed to be addressed before a noticeable difference could be felt.

I haven't tried taking the belt off. But as per my limited knowledge , bad pulleys make a different kind of sound. It's not that kind of sound. It's like an exhaust leak or knock/pinging

issue is if i take off the belt to test any diffference in noise, i cant do that because the noise only comes when driving (not at idle) .

Do you think i can test drive without the belt on for a limited time?

you can produce the noise while idling. Put the car in Drive, pull hand brake, press brake with left foot and press accelerator with right foot. Raise the RPM to 2-2.5k range. You'll hear the noise. ask someone to pay attention to the exhaust manifold area. It's most probably the exhaust manifold gasket which is bit loose making flapping noise under load. easily to confuse it with pinging.
