While this was open, i got the VVTI cam gear overhauled, cleaned.

can you elaborate on this sentence? - what exactly was overhauled in the cherry blossom dibbi?

im thinking now it could be something with the throttle body ? or TPS ? just guessing. Any chance you could get another throttle body on loan to just install and check for a day? lets see how that goes

Pray tell how does one overhaul a vvti pulley, when there are exactly zero parts available for it.

I will try borrowing TB from mechanic just to check the issue as he will be back after couple of days. No one else offer this kind of help.

IF that is the case,
then the next logical step is to ensure combustion pressure.
That will require you to inspect valve, valve seats and valve guides as step 1 and piston sealing as step 2.

It is impossible to assume you will be get this done right, by our local ustaads.

so, just drive the car as it is , or overhaul the engine.

very true. bitter truth actually. already learned to live with it since I've had this issue over 2-3 years now. since new cars have gotten really expensive now, so I'm now on the mission to keep mine in top condition. and try to do as much preventive maintenance as possible.

I dont see a single video in there showing how to overhaul the VVTI pulley of toyota chain or cam scissor gear driven VVTi units. - the only ones that say rebuild are the old timing belt pulleys of the VVTi version of the 2JZ - which again is not overhaul but just installing new O rings.

so again, what was overhauled in it? the leaf springs, the nylon blocks, the locking pin are not sold as replacement parts, the whole unit is sold as a piece.

most probably it has solid deposits on its piston tops which start glowing under high temperature, Those are formed by using Hi-octane fuel in these engines and then the other poison called 20W50 which caramelize the ring stack and also contribute to the coking on the piston tops.

poor guy has been throwing fuel pumps etc at it - but with no thorough testing.

baat overhaul ki, phir suboot champi paalish ka.

imagine you overhaul a brake master cylinder by just cleaning it and scratching it too then using torn/worn piston seals - because "overhaul ho gya"

isnt the VVTI actualter a small insert sort of thing to be bolted on head with a lever going inside? yes i tried to service it and ended up with washing it with carb cleaner, to me it looked like a sealed unit.
yes i cleaned the electrical grip contacts

That is the vvti solenoid you see outside, it allows oil to pass to the vvti pulley to advance cam timing as required.

It is also not serviceable,
