2016 Corolla GLI 1.3 Engine Overhaul Experience

Hello Everyone,

I am longtime reader and posting on this group for the first time. I would appreciate your feedback..

I bought a used Corolla GLI 2016 with 84K KM. i was getting 4KM/L average. I changed the oil & filter, transmission oil and the spark plugs. The fuel average improved to 6KM/L.

Then I had air filter replaced, throttle valve assembly cleaned. Had Fuel Injectors inspected and cleaned, O2 Sensor cleaned, Catlalic Convertor claned (no acid). The fuel average improved to 6.5 in the city and 7.8 max on the highway.

Engine runs louder than normal on high speeds.

The pevious owner apparently had impact from below as the oil pan nut was pushed in and was leaking oil. I can get the suspension checked? Any other suggestions that anyone has?

my opinion

you purchased a damaged car
not from the body or engine end
but from below
seems like previous owner drove it over a green belt or something and scrapped it from below really badly

recheck o2 sensor and catalytic converter

Faced something similar where I bought a low miles Corolla. My car's exterior was immaculate, so was the suspension/brakes. etc, but the engine was another story. Was not properly maintained before, gave me 7 kmpl when I bought it, no power and the car was absolutely trash to drive. I spent around 2 lakhs on it in a year, changing everything from valves, fuel pump, radiator, clutch, etc. Basically everything except the block, crank and pistons and rods were bought OEM new. I could not believe when I was told it had it's valves changed to local ones somewhere in it's life. Khair by the time I was done with it, it returned 14kmpl in city with ac, and the performance was worlds apart. Sold it later.

You probably bought a similar car, but with yours I think the miles are rolled back too.

If your car was hit from the underside, there is a chance it bent your crank case/oil pan, which was later fixed by the previous owner. Any dents or irregularities to the oil pan can cause issues with less oil reaching your engine internals, as the oil pick up is right by the oil drain plug. You need to get your engine oil pressure checked.

Comp test is a test of how much compression your cylinders can hold, that is something else.

I've got different mechanics for different things, can probably hook you up with the main guy who fixed alot of stuff on my Corolla to as close to OEM as possible.

This is how the car performed after I was done with it. Gave me pretty good average on the motorway too, while I rung it out to 160+ kmph for short intervals, just to test the engine.

I would like the get the suspension also checked to see if the previous owner tried to hide other things.
How the oil pressure is checked?

Through an oil pressure test kit, but can be visually checked too, mechanics here don't use this tester kit. Also check PM

Get it scanned first and check for the readings on scanner by proper electrician / technician.

Did the scanning done twice by different electricians. They couldnt find anything wrong other than tuneup.

That's what happens when people run behind a total genuine instead of a mechanically fit car.
Touched parts won't give you issues, mechanical parts will. Check catalytic converter and wheel alignment. Switch to oem spark plugs.

am sure the vehicle has been running over a bad engine oil grade. a bad pcv valve can cause serious compromised engine performance. bad pcv also drop engine oil pressure and create sludge in engine head as well. OEM PCV can be sourced from any parts dealer in your town. The recommended Engine oil for a Toyota EFI engine is 5W-30.

take vehicle to ramp during day light inspect it carefully. pay close attention from rear to front as we paid attention in teens to playboy center-fold. Such inspection will tell you history of vehicle and the suspension condition as well.

if the engine oil sump drain bolt is leaking or sump appears de-shaped. Drain engine oil remove sump & get it fixed. Use new drain bolt with correct washer.

use new oil filter and correct engine oil. you will notice significant change in engine idling and fuel consumption.

Sometimes oil guys remove oem drain bolt seal and fits in desi ones. Yes, I even use toyota drain bolt seal . Desi can leak some of the oil.

Highly recommended that you take car to Toyota and inspect it on their lift instead of local mechanic who will tell you that everything is bad.
