I totally agree.. most of Yaris buyers are those who were already potential Toyota buyers . That's is why I mentioned in my earlier comment that Civic+ City combine sales number didnt shift in negative. Market do confirm that Sportage did take away both Corolla and Civic customers.

As of timeline , Honda Atlas is planning to bring the replacement Honda City in 6 to 8 months from now. Anyways, once I have more info on this matter, I will share with this great community of Pakwheels

• City user since 2012

• Was eagerly looking forward to buy newer (6th gen) model of Honda City in 2015

• XLI/GLI were never my priority. In my opinion they were underpowered for their weight and size and their fuel economy was pretty poor (particularly after City)

Another friend, long time Honda user, has bought a Yaris as well due to no new City model launched by Honda Atlas for so long. So, the assumption that it's XLI/GLI buyers who are buying Yaris is incorrect. If that was the case, why would Honda even be under any pressure to launch new model of Honda City in Pakistan? There are actually plenty of XLI/GLI buyers who aren't happy with Yaris and are paying ridiculous amounts of own money to buy those older models.

Some of the reasons why people (including myself) preferred Honda City over XLI/GLI were as follows

• GLI is underpowered for its weight and size (84hp)
• GLI is significantly more expensive (price difference between base variants used to be close to 400k)
• GLI has less features than City (used to be somewhat true before Corolla facelift)
• Fuel economy of GLI is much worse than that of Honda City

Yaris basically addressed many of the reasons why people purchased Honda City instead of GLI/XLI.
- Yaris is not underpowered (98hp)
- Yaris is not significantly more expensive (Price difference between base variants is 20k only)
- Yaris is much more feature rich compared to City
- Fuel economy of Yaris is as good or better than that of Honda City (better in case of CVT vs Auto City)

Yaris has provided genuine competition to Honda City at same price range. No matter what we want to believe in, Honda Atlas is looking at introducing new model of Honda City not out of its concern for us or goodness of its heart, but due to competition it is facing from Toyota.

A buyer with a budget of 25-30 lacs will opt for Yaris if he wants a Toyota. Previously this buyer bought an Xli/gLi. This buyer was never interested about how much power the engine made. He just wanted a big car.

But this doesnt not mean that City owners arnt switching to Yaris. Obviously they are. But is it a significant number to dent Atlas sales? The sale figures dont say so.

Then why new city launching in 2020 after launch of yaris.
It could have launched in 2014,2015,2016,2017,2018,2019

My Honda City 1.3 Manual Gives 14-15 km per liter in City with AC while it gives 16.2 km per liter on Highway

my xli manual constantly gave me 15 in city, when i drove it even more carefully it gave 17.2kmpl tank to tank in city. So yes corolla is heavy but the higher torque at lower revs of the engine allows you to drive it at 1200 to 1500 rpm easy. where as for city it has to be driven to 2000 for gear change.

and even at 1500 rpm you could accelerate without down shifting, not a luxury in city. so driving style matters.

yaris is smaller than corolla but still in the league of city, has all the gizmos (plus air bags), lighter body more efficient engine.

So yes it is starting to give city a challenge and if new gen city is not brought in it will be bigger headache for Honda.

The reality is Honda Atlas walon k hosh uray hue hen.

They realize the product they've been fooling the public with is crap and won't give them any returns in like 2 years when this segment is entirely captured by Yaris.

Because there's absolutely no competition at all in this segment of compact sedan now..

The current city is just like Mehran but in sedan form with no features.

Jitna choosna tha awam ko choos lia.

We all should be thanking Indus for bringing some innovation in this category

There is no evidence to support Yaris is taking City share
1. City sales are strong and even combined sales are always 70/30 civic and city
2. Yaris sales are more but Corolla sales are declining as well (it means it is cannibalizing its superior brand) .Discontinuation XLI/GLI is a great risk right now .

My 2 cents may be people are going to hate me 5th generation is better in many aspects then 6th generation only missing are goodies which people get from after market .Grace being an average looking car in comparison to 5th generation .Perhaps Honda could have waited for 7th generation platform would have been wise decision . Rest they know how to hank this crowd .I fear with coming competition of Proton and FAW compact .Honda this decision will be short sighted . Bring 7th generation it will take sales even for 1.6 Corolla category
