There are no physical gears in a CVT, i.e. daanton wali garari nahi hoti.
The 7-speed CVT is a misnomer - just a marketing gimmick. These are just preset diameters of the pulley, that can be selected by the user. This is a fairly pointless feature.
The aim of a transmission is to keep the engine in a certain RPM range for different driving conditions, whether for power or fuel economy.
Theoretically, a CVT is better than a traditional, step-shift transmission at doing this. In reality, a CVT is not nearly as robust as traditional transmissions (not counting the e-CVT in a hybrid).
In addition, a dead CVT can not be rebuilt like a traditional automatic/manual transmission.
Most consumers here in Pakistan, having fallen for marketing gimmicks, now think that CVT is a superior transmission, when in actuality it's pretty useless. Sadly, because of (misinformed) consumer demand, traditional torque-converter automatics are pretty much gone (except for the Altis 1.6).
