Yes you can even put in high wattage ones and they'll work. When I shifted my JBL component speakers I first tested them with the stock head unit before wiring in the amplifier. The bass seemed reduced from the original speakers but it sounded much clearer. Wiring is simple plug and play as far as I know for speakers in doors.
But again my suggestion would be to either go for a full system with coaxials, amp and sub or just keep the stock system. Just speakers alone won't feel like much of an upgrade. Even speakers with amp and without sub might not feel very adequate as the bass will be lacking unless you go for really high end component speakers with a good amp and a lot of quality soundproofing in the doors, which will be expensive and difficult. And speakers alone may even sound a bit worse as door cards might start rattling a bit after being opened, negating the sound quality improvement.
Also it depends on your preferences as well, for me bass is really important and in my experience no door speakers can produce proper bass, 6x9 speakers can though, but those speakers are installed in rear deck and would need cutting the deck in city and they make sound quality a bit weird as they're louder than door speakers, so it seems like sound is coming from the back side rather than the front which doesn't sound proper.
