2E Engine to EFi Conversion

My brother have recently bought a Corolla 1999 having its original 1300 2e Engine. He now wants EFi for economy. We met a mechanic who was expert of his area. Just told him about swap . He asked many solutions. One of his solutions is as under. At the same engine block , 2E, new piston and EFi head along with wiring of EFi 1300 cc engine will be fitted. This will cost about 70,000 Is it possible to convert a carborator base engine to EFi? Will it work and give fuel economy as 15-16 km/l.? Is such alterations legel?

the 2E-E engine basically is the carby engine with an EFI intake manifold which houses the injectors and coolant sensor too, a distributor that is controlled by the ECU and a single wire o2 sensor in the exhaust.

Its not a very good engine, it performs same as a good tuned 2E engine, a better option would be to choose some twin cam vairant of the E series or even a variant of the A series engine.

Chances of finding 2E-E efi setup is close to non.
But yes conversion can be done.
Swapping engine is also an option.

There were literal thousands upon thousands of 2E-E engines bought by scrappies and sold without the intake and exhaust manifolds and also the distributor as everything from the carby engine bolts on.

This was back when EFI was called "afee" or "elfy" or atomizer wala injann (uptil the mid 2000s) - some may still be having those manifolds, ecu and wiring in their wrecked piles.

Thanks, are you advising about 4E-FE , or 5A. Are these not too much old series engines? If swap is option then What do you say about 2 NZ FE swap. The imported Japanese that is from Probox / x Corolla. 1300 cc. Or 1 NZ FE that was in Probox / Premio.

Nz series would be much better if alterations are done properly

Agreed with your opinion. 4E, 5 A are too much old while NZ series are new, modern & more advanced.
Most important thing is availability of spare parts is easily from 3S Dealers.

What about material composition of these NZ series? Are they made up of light weight Alloy? You deal daily with them so how do you find it in terms of weight?

Weight wise nz series is lighter then A series as A series has cast iron blocks where as NZ has Aluminum Alloy block.
So parts availability plus sourcing is far better than A series
