I have a 2009 corolla xli with almost 180k kms and it is eating like 0.6 litres if not more oil after every 3000kms. I am using havoline 20w 50 but I was thinking of swapping the engine. Any advices on what is best to do in this case, is overhaul a bad choice ?

Logically an overhaul would be your best choice if anything, rather than getting a scrapyard engine

Get it's compression tested first and check for leakage. 0.6L/3000 kms is normal for an older engine. If you don't feel loss in power and bad average, drive it as it is.

Swap the engine assembly it costs around 190-220 with old engine assembly low engine oil viacoaity compatible.
Rest low price engine assembly swaps are scrap

Pkdm engine above then 2012 are rebuild able if the engine is not opened and messed up.
Old gen NZ series of pkdm are hard to build because of worn off parts like cam shafts improper crank shaft journals etc oil pumps are hard to find these days for the models before 2012.
So a good rebuild shoots upto 250-320k
In this range most of the people backs off from rebuilds and tends toward swaps.

2010 gli we got engine replaced with 1NZFE from a family BMW authorized mechanic. Simply changed the block. Ecu , throttle body, intake manifold , wiring everything is untouched.
Running on 5w30 . 14.8 kmph. Over 15 on motorway full loaded with clutch Wala compressor.
Performace is very nice as the engine we got a absolutely prestine with oem ignition coils. I have images aswell.

Around 2 lakh cost for swap
