I would test drive both and see which one you like.
Family just purchased ours a few months back. 2006 3.2 did. I absolutely love the power and driving of the 3.2. Two common things to watch out for are the timing chain guide (pre-2006). It is a cheap part and easily replaceable. Other is the mechanical fuel pump. Very finicky and expensive to replace. You MUST change the fuel filter with good quality one regularly. I am going to be changing every 7-10,000 Kms. Make sure to buy good quality ones.
Fuel average is decent for this big vehicle. Don't drive much in the city as we have small van for that, but on long I am getting anywhere from 7-9 km/L depending on traffic, driving style, speed and tire pressure. Forget about fuel average in town for this type of vehicle. It is never good. Make sure to ensure of all regular maintenance like air filter, fuel filter etc. Get diesel from good pumps.
Parts for mitsubishi are hard to find. Have to look really hard or search online. Alhamdulillah I have not had any major issues yet. My only issue was the starter not starting the car. Randomly it would click and no start. I removed it myself and had it cleaned. It has been fine since then.
Check for all the normal things when buying. Smoking on startup, cold start, warm starting, hard acceleration etc..
I have not driven a 2.8, but have heard they have higher rpm on the highway. Not sure if this is true. Also heard they run out of power after 110km. This is where I love the 3.2 it just keeps going.
Alhamdulillah, I wish you the best of luck with your purchase. When we were looking, Prado were out of budget. I looked at this one, and a 2013 fortuner. After driving both, I RAN back to get the pajero!
