Yes, there are 2 different ones available:

1. Carrier branded (Zong, Warid, PTCL CharJi) devices that have been unlocked so you can use any SIM you want (3G or 4G). They're not very expensive, but they have the logo of the original operator written on it.

2. Huwaei fully unlocked device. It looks the same as all the other devices, but no carrier logo. Just a Huwaei logo. They are unlocked out of the box, so you can buy one and use any SIM you want.
   They're a bit expensive, but on the plus side, you get no carrier logo and a warranty.

Are you currently using any of them?

Also is it possible to check your remaining balance through the device just like how it is done through a mobile phone? Or you have to remove the SIM in order to check that?

Carriers like Warid and Zong allow you to use a Selfcare account to check remaining balance and data. For other networks, you'll have to take the SIM out.

As for your first question, no I am not. I know people who use them, but have never used one myself.

3G/4G modems are available in markets. Just put any SIM and internet will work. I would recommend to choose TP-Link 3G/4G USB modems as they are reliable. Those are expensive but totally worth it. Huawei products fail often. Last time when I visited PTCL OSS, I was shocked to see so many people who brought their charji (huawei actually) devices back because those built some fault. Some were not connecting to internet and some had dead LCD. Even my own Wingle (again Huawei) failed due to overheating issue.
All mobile compaines in pakistan are now supplying Huawei modems (Wingle, Mifi) and I am observing quite high failure rate.

I continue to have issues with zongs consistency. Gathered proof, where fb or google for eg wasnt loading on zong. Then switched to warid and it loaded fine. Got a call that they have no nationwide issues and upgrades are being done, which should resolve the issue. Dont see anyone here though complaining of this, guess my area is more affected. (near bahria town lahore).

Just an idea:
TP-Link 3G Mifi M5350 costs 7500 rupees.
TP-Link 4G mifi M7350 costs 12,000 rupees.

Both are available locally at Hafeez center Lahore or may be bought online....!

That's true.

Those portable modems are not very suitable and meant for 24/7 usage, like the normal WiFi routers after all.

So, for a good 24/7 usage, one must invest in a good modem. It helps a lot.

This was the speed I got on roof top with full signals. It was not stable and fell down to 20-25 Mbps. It's Zong 4G.

The fastest I've gotten at KC was 25 back in August. So it has improved since.
At home I get full bars of 3G between 6-11 Mbps. Rarely does it go below 6 so it's rather consistent.

Did you try PTCL toll free number where you normally order new phone connections and DSL connections. Tell them you wanna upgrade and then see if they can help or not.
