Long awaited 3G license is likely to be auctioned in three to four weeks, reported “The Peninsula” of Qatar, citing an interview with Hafeezur Rehman, Federal Secretary for Information Technology and Telecom.

Paper further quotes that policy for launching 3G services has already been submitted to the federal cabinet, and its matter of just few weeks to auction 3G spectrum.

He said despite the global recession and a worrying security situation the government wants the 3G services to be available for the Pakistani cellular customers.

He said the base price for auction of the spectrum will be decided by the cabinet besides the policy decision whether the existing operators only will be allowed to participate or more international companies will be invited. “The; ministry has also submitted its recommendations op these matters; but the final decision rests with the federal cabinet,” he added.

He said the policy in this regard will not be discriminating for existing companies or new entrants and the base price will also be set keeping in view the international recession and market trends. He said that the 3G services will be provided in a three phase process.

That's good news!

however, I am still a bit skeptical about it's launch in Pakistan.

Because the price of 3G license is too much, while the return on investment isn't that much. Moreover, the value 3G network is going to offer, might not give them enough business as majority of our mobile users aren't much aware of 3G facilities and benefits.

3G will also bring some change in pricing, as the rates might increase. this can be another set back for operator who is going to opt it before any one else is going to do so.

Let's hope in this situation of crisies, recessions and (slef made govt) terrorism, we can see such advancement in telecom as well as other sectors.

These days are really harsh for Telecom sector in Pakistan. I doubt that any operator will be willing to get 3g license. They are already suffering from such "LOW RATE" competition. Keeping the numbers in mind, the investment in 3G will be much much more than the outcome of its sales. Infact it will take a lot of time to reach at Break even Point.
Any ways, lets hope for the best.
And for broad band, I'll prefer EVDO over any other technology any day!and yes, Its available in Pakistan.

PTA seems very optimistic about 3G but things seems to me otherwise.

first off the spectrum price is quite high which operators are skeptical for buying. Then, the operators are still expanding their GSM/EDGE network, with companies already in bad conditions , its not logical to think that they will think about deploying 3G networks soon. My own pessimism comes from the fact that what 3G offers to people, wont create a stirr. Its a standard which offer broadband speed for internet, video calling and access to multimedia services. I dont think many people in use internet on their phone regularly, so 3G wont help here. Alot of people dont even use EDGE, so how can they use 3G services.[ Video calls will definitely be expensive. So, at first it would be occassional and will take a long time for people to get use to it. Even back in 2005, people in england werent very curious about it. The only thing which i can say would interest people will be HSPA which could be used to compete with WiMAX.

And keep in mind that the final standard before 4G ( 3G-LTE) is just around the corner. So, why wont companies wait for it ??... There is no rush for 3G ...is it ??.. At least not from Operators

P.S. I have heard that alcatel lucent has been give 3G contract in pakistan by Zong ??. is it true??

To be honest!

telecom isn't much concerned about low rates,

rather they are being ruined by high taxes...

since one year, taxes on telecom has been increased from 5% to 29%. Which is almost 24% increase. If government realizes this and give them some relaxation in form of taxes, then they are surely going to spend more money on expansion and growth.

the impact can be seen by an example.

for example a telecom revenue was 10,000,000. earlier they used to pay only 500,000. Now they are paying 2,900,000

and revenue of telecom sectors is much more than this.
