an honest advise that you might not like - upgrade your corolla to a 2.5 million vehicle and it will serve you alot better than any 20+ years old 2.5 million SUV. This is based on personal experience of few old SUVs.

Coming to SUVs, Surf usually requires less maintenance, can find a better vehicle in 2.5 million, more vehicles available in market and cheaper to maintain compared to an Land Cruiser. For the abovementioned use, the Petrol 2.7 would suffice and should give you better ownership experience. Diesels, Turbos, Intercoolers sound great but are prone to failure on older vehicles.

Agree that a 80 Series should be avoided and especially when you are a newbie.

Do not buy an SUV without proper Pre Purchase inspection from a SUV Mechanic. This thread can help you identify some of the good ones https://www.pakwheels.com/forums/t/jeep-mechanic-in-lahore/897866 . Unless you are v lucky, you will need to do serious maintenance and would need to keep some of the budget aside for it.

Pakwheels n Olx prices are usually overstated and SUV sell well below the quoted prices.

My primary reason for going for a diesel Toyota SUV is because of robustness, reliability, ground clearance and fuel economy (especially given what's happening every other day). After test driving an 80 series, and a couple of Surfs, I think I'm leaning towards the Surf more as well. Can you please elaborate further as to why a petrol would be a better option? I intend to contact one of the 4x4 mechanics you shared with me and get a Diesel Surf checked by them. Wouldn't it be okay if they give me a go-ahead for the diesel one after an evaluation?

The one I've identified has an ask for 36.5 and seems to be in reasonable condition (read: not bad but not great or exceptional compared to the other Surfs I've checked out in Lahore). Biggest turn-off was that the guy wouldn't allow me a test drive, and the fuel gauge was below empty which is just downright horrible for a diesel engine. Also, he drove it in 4H all the time and when I asked him why he isn't driving it on 2H, he claimed that Surf was a full-time 4WD which I found to be preposterous but please correct me if I'm wrong. Plus he didn't seem convinced when I said I'll have to get it assessed by a mechanic which would involve him bringing the vehicle down to the workshop. Any tips on dealing with the guy and on bringing him significantly near my budget? I admit the vehicle seemed okay but nothing great or exceptional to warrant anything more than 25 in my humble opinion. I intend to keep aside 4-5 lacs for any work that could be required or 4x4 accessories.

CH Sb has as usual given a fine opinion. He is a seasoned resource and has summed it up pretty well. Also I am pleasantly surprised to see a newbie having the sense to set aside .5 million for maintenance etc which is a 100% requirement for purchasing these fossils. What I am not happy to read is that you are expecting a fuel efficient beast which has aged to be classified as a relic. These 90s vintage SUVs are NOT fuel efficient nor are these maintenance free. Trust the word of an owner who is maintaining the last of the great dinosaurs: Land Cruiser 80 Series aka CRUISING

agree that the Surf under consideration isnt worth your time and energy, hunt for better options.

20+ years diesel SUV will not be reliable (until maintained by yourself from a SUV specialist), will not be fuel efficient (dont expect anything above 8km/l), robust maybe if reliability is achieved. Petrol 2.7 (not 3.4) serves your purpose well and would be easier to maintain, run and closer to a sedan feel. If possible, test drive all 3 versions, 3.0 diesel, 2.7 and 3.4 and then decide.

Great idea to get the vehicle checked by a specialist, you can discuss the maintenance, running costs, ownership experience of Petrol vs Diesel with them.

Dont forget to test drive a 2.5 million Corolla as it might be the best option for your use

AOA brother. Your budget is low to get a decent SUV in this price range. The only options you'll have would be ones that will need a lot of TLC and believe me you'll go bankrupt. I would suggest you to get a decent 2nd Pajero they're very reliable and comfortable.
