Some important information about Kundol Lake Trek before we get carried away by its beauty
Starting Point: Broken hotels 2 km ahead of Utror which is last jeepable point at the moment. The bridge to Laddu is broken. So, u have to go a little ahead towards Izmis Lake trek and cross a bridge to come back to main trek.
Starting Altitude: 7,900 ft
Jeep Track: Earlier, jeeps used to go till Laddu Village but these days only a couple of km ahead of Utror
Trek length: 6.6 km + 6.6 km = 13.2 km for return journey. But it take more time due to destroyed trek beyond Laddu Village.
Lake Altitude: 10,000 ft
Trek Description
Utror village is the last point where routine daily life stuff is available. Bikes / jeeps can go couple of km ahead of Utror to a point where buildings of 2 old hotels stand in the middle of ferocious water stream which are abandoned now. There is a bridge near these destroyed hotels which got destroyed as well just before our visit due to rains and fast melting of snow.
From this point onwards, there is another bridge on Izmis Lake trek which is only 20-30 min walk and then u come back to main trek of Kundol Lake.
The trek is beautiful, green, flowery and under shades of forest trees till the point where village Laddu used to exist. You can reach that spot within one hour. This part of trek is on right side of stream coming from Kundol. Laddu village was also destroyed in floods and now residents of this village come all the way from Utror, follow their daily routine of farming and then go back. Earlier, jeeps used to come to this point and there was a hotel here also. Remember, Laddu village location is on the left side of stream. From this village location, trek also goes to Laddu Lake. If the bridge near broken hotels is remade then u can reach Laddu Village spot directly on left side of Kundol stream by walking on jeep track itself.
Now there are 2 treks that go to Kundol Lake. One is this same trek on right side and ascends very steeply and goes till the lake.
2nd option is to cross a big glacier just after coming out of forest and go to left side of stream. Now there is actually no trek left. Families used to do this trek in 2.5 hrs till the lake and trek used to ascend alongwith the stream. But now there is no trek and it is totally destroyed due to floods and rains.
It is more like rock climbing exercise all the way to the lake and u have to make your own way through big and small rocks, bushes, uneven slopes and very narrow paths. We encountered 3 very dangerous crossings:
1- A landslide area- the cut of landslide on mountain slope falls directly into Kundol stream which is very very strong like Ratti Gali. So, we had to climb above the starting point of landslide and then come down to the path again. This alternate route is extremely steep and coming down is very dangerous. If u slip, u r straight into water.
2 & 3 - There were 2 glaciers with no paths. One was more steep and going straight into water but was short. Other was less steep but longer and going down into rocks and then water. Porters made footsteps for us and we crossed by following those footsteps. These were clean white glaciers so no stones, mud or grass to create friction. Raheel slipped on second glacier but was saved by porters Alhamdulillah. Asif Saeed also slipped on these glaciers and lost car keys and luggage in their trip.
Now the trek time has increased significantly due to these hurdles and mainly due to destruction of dirt trek which lead straight to the lake on left side. It will take 5-6 hrs from destroyed hotels till the lake. Right side could be more steep but i think it will take less time as trek is established.
So, better to follow the steeper route on right side which may be more tiring but i think should be safer as compared to left side route.
There are 3 or 4 fresh water springs on the way so water is not an issue or Kundol stream is always available.
The shelter near the lake is very handy. Our porters asked us to drop the cylinders as they can easily collect wood there for fire in the shelter. So, we dropped the bigger cylinder and carried only a 2kg small cylinder in case of emergency. Porters collected wood and made fire in the shelter. We did the cooking stuff on same fire and was handy in very cold weather at the lake.
Camping surface is not good near the shelter but there is hardly any free space near the bank of lake as most of it is covered with rocks.
I don't think glaciers will be an issue anymore as by now foot marks and path would have been well established or they may melt completely in next few days.
But that landslide is a big issue on left side trek.
A note on bikes ... there are 3 places between Kalam and Utror where water was overflowing the road when we were returning in the evening. So evening crossings for bikes may be tough if water flow is high. Vehicles were getting stuck every now and then on this road.
At the end ............... it is worth all the struggle
... Kundol is absolutely amazing lake and u will definitely love it !!!
