9th Gen Civic - Cooling Fans Not Starting

Assalam alaikum,
I have a 9th gen civic 2013 ug model. Yesterday the entertainment/navigation screen stuck and wouldn’t turn off even after i turned off the engine. Me and my friend removed the battery for 5 minutes and it rebooted. But he noticed that the engine was heating up which it should because we just had a 20 min drive. There was no high temperature warning and we turned the engine on to check if the fans were working or not. They weren’t working until I turn on the a/c. My friend suggested that i do not drive the car until i get it inspected or it could blow the head gasket. I wanted to know if the fans not working is an issue because I checked on the internet that fans turn on automatically when the car gets heated and they do not play a big part in cooling the engine. We also tried to rev the engine so it could get heated and the fans would turn on but they didn’t. Now i do not know if that revving helped the engine heat up enough to start the fans. Also i dont think this might be an issue because the temperature warning wasn’t there and it did not heat up like alot, but it is still a concern to me. Now should i get it inspected or should i take a long drive with a/c off to check if the fans turn on automatically when the engine heats up ?

first of all, please do check if your car has enough coolant /water in radiator or not, because engine temperature sensor works by sensing the coolant temperature whether it needs to turn the fan on or not.

secondly, if the car is not showing heatup sign, and the fans are not running when the A/C is off, it's perfectly fine as in this cold weather the engine does not often need to turn the fan on without the A/C on.

if the fan is working with A/C on, then no need to worry. as that is the most crucial part where the engine needs cooling.

and by the way fan do play a big BIG role in cooling the engine down.. that's why they turn on as soon as you switch the A/C on.

Thanks alot for the reply sir really appreciate it that you addressed to my concern. If i could ask you one more thing. I just bought this car a week ago and i know that i have to get it inspected from honda and a complete maintenance must be done. I just wanted to know beforehand of what filters, oils, fluids i need to change. As i have heard they try to add more to the list even if it isn’t required. I just want to know what’s like really important to get changed. Also the car has run 80k so which is the best oil which i should use regularly. The engine is really good performing and i want to keep it that way.

The owner said that he got the oil and filters changed at 79k. But i dont thinks its true.

Change everything :- oil, oil filter and clean air filter and ac filter if needed. Also change Atf transmission fluid which is very important. Overall maintenance should be carried out as it's 80k driven and check any suspension part which is worn out. Never rely upon previous owners as they tend to lie in order to sell their car. Tyres should also be in good condition.
Recommended oil grade from Honda should be used which I think is 5w30, do get suggestion from dealership not local mechanic whom always recommend the thickest oil possible.

I am checking the coolant every day and its full.

coolant is full, that's a good news.
Fan working with A/C on, good.
No engine heat light showing, good.
without A/C fan might take time to start, because engine does not require much load in that case especially in the winters, don't worry.

so overall your car is behaving perfectly fine, nothing to worry about.

however, most important thing is to get engine oil, oil filter, air filter and gear oil changed (even if the previous owner has changed it recently, you should get them changed yourself so you can keep a record in your own maintenance book).

and rest of the things you can get them changed as problems show up no big issue.

i don't own a Civic, so i cannot recommend which engine oil is best for it, but i think 5W/30 or genuine Honda engine oil and gear oil would be good.

how did you deduce that the engine temperature was abnormal? feel by hand?

Just standing next to it when the bonnet was open. We could feel a lot heat and we thought that it was not normal. I think it might be the oil change that is needed. Thanks for replying btw.

I don't think you can deduce that the engine is getting hot by just standing near it or by touching it. obviously it will be hot since it was running for 20 minutes. auto fans mostly do not runs frequently in this cold weather. if your coolant level is good and their is no temperature warning signal you are good to go.
