Sept. 2: We didn't catch any fish but land our most scenic campspot yet

Tuesday September 2, 2008, 43 miles (69 km) - Total so far: 736 miles (1,184 km)

We entered the Kosh-Agach county, the last county before Mongolia. We were pretty happy about it, as the high country was incredibly scenic. After a couple days of rough food hunting, we were feeling a little starved and laughed that even the goats on this arch were looking a little thin, their ribs sticking out.

We came around a bend, and bam, these mountains were right in front of us!

We found this camp spot and felt like the luckiest people in the world. No one else was around, except a woman who pulled up near our tent in the early morning. Fearing we'd trespassed, we prepared for a confrontation, but instead she unpacked her easel and paints and proceeded to paint for four hours while we puttered about camp, reluctant to leave

Sept. 3: From sublime to slimy in one day

Wednesday September 3, 2008, 50 miles (80 km) - Total so far: 786 miles (1,264 km)

We left our camp spot late, after tending to some repairs and maintenance that were needed to our sleeping mats (a leak) and the bikes.

We loved these mountains, and since they were within sight for a morning of riding, we took a lot of pictures of them.

We stopped in this village in search of food, but the only store we saw had several drunk characters lounging outside of it, so we decided to eat our Snickers for lunch and press on. As I look over our pictures from this leg of the trip, I realize how very few we have of the people we saw. I think it's because the Altai people (different from the Kazakhs further up in the Altai) were outrageously shy, or even scared of us. They would literally change their paths to avoid us, and very few people were on the streets of these villages except for the village alcoholics, who were generally harmless but annoying because they tried to have incoherent conversations with us, touching us and our equipment.

I regret we don't have more photos of the people we saw, but it was for a good reason: they didn't like us taking pictures of them and I felt uncomfortable in many of these villages anyway. We passed through quickly.
