Advice needed for Toyota 2L Turbo engine

hey all i need some advice regarding my range rover classic (74) that has a toyota 2L turbo engine.
I feel it to be a little under powered n wanted ideas on how to give it a boost without affecting the fuel economy too much...

ideas i got myself are,
1. Add an inter cooler... problem with this is that i don't wanna cut a hood scoop into the bonnet and i don't know how large an inter cooler to use.
2. Increase the boost on the turbo. but frankly i haven't the slightest clue on how to do that...

if anyone could help me with these 2 points and if they'd like to add anything i'd appreciate it!!!

the tranny and engine are both from a prado... toyota 2L-TE (2.4 liter).
and the vehicle has already been mentioned, 1974 range rover classic...

Thank you for that link. It looks like a great vehicle.

How many miles on the drivetrain? What transmission and differentials? Service history? Has power dropped off recently? What is your proposed budget for the upgrades?

well basically the jeep's original v8 was swapped out for the toyota diesel abt 15 years ago. it was accidented (rolled over) shortly after that n garaged for abt 10-11 years after which it was restored early this year. so that's the history...
and i havent faced a decrease in power, it's felt a little sluggish from the start!!
budget to be as minimal as possible... as most of it has already been blown in the restoration.

upping the boost alone will not push a diesel, you need to adjust the LDA on the pump - if you are running an actual mechanical turbo pump. Ive seen so many 2LTE swaps that needed an ECU to run - but instead the cheating mechanic or engine seller just put a regular pump on it with no fuel enrichment unit - and the engine became completely air freindly - with a super clean exhaust, and massively asthmatic too.

this would be a good time to mention that the engine is no longer a 2L-T"E"... the electric pump's been replaced for a mechanical one....
i read somewhere that one can up the boost from the turbo and adjust the fuel pump to compensate the extra air???

I am no expert but i think you nailed it on the head.

Another thing the vehicle in consideration weighs well over two long tons. If the engine was in OEM setup the vehicle would still be drastically underpowered compared to modern vehicles in that category.

You must look at your pump and see if it has a round fat disc shaped part on the top - this part has an air boost signal line on it - what it does is - when the turbocharger hits boost it will depress a diaphragm which has an offset cone in the bottom, the cone levers the max fuel metering sleeve to increase the amount of diesel fuel the engine is getting. (MORE AIR + MORE FUEL = TORQUE) -

more air + original fuelling = super clean exhaust pipe and no torque boost.

Furthermore I have yet to find any retail place that can setup a denso diesel pump like I want, they just think they are demi gods in the diesel pump world and spew out the most stupidest things I have heard, - naazel pressure se koi farq nahin hota, turbo pump kyon chahiye hum aap ke pump ko turbo se zyada acha bana dengay.. I felt like breaking their neck. These same famous idiots had swapped mercedes nozzle holders for nissan ones saying that its difficult to find original diesel return bleed pipes for the benz (WHAT - I can buy that stuff at the rubber market for Rs 30/ft - if you butchered a system for that amount of cheapness you deserve to fail)

The best place I know only work on Bosch pumps. But usually I take pumps apart myself - inside a very clean room with a very very powerful exhaust - assemble with new parts - and have it bench tested at a shop - my injection pressure tester is an old bosch piece I bought from shershah junkyard - and I install the pump with a dial gauge adapter for accurate injection timing

Theoretically and practically the 2LT is a small engine for this rig but given the amount of experimentation and jugglery that we have done here in Rawalpindi and documented here on PW, or rather over documented (thanks to xulfiqar, vcheng, samivodoo, Sherwan88 and Charged), I feel it can still be used to produce some interesting results.

The funny issue with the mechanical 2LT is that there are too many variables (from the pump, to boost controller to the turbo) all of which can be quite easily tinkered with and ajdusted. It is not really possible to assess the state a particular engine is in without a proper inspection by an experienced mechanic.

Suggest that you should drive down to Rawalpindi sometime after eid and meet up for some initial real time assessment, following which we can continue the analysis out here.
