when i was growing up and struggling to study at an school, books of social studies & civic sciences gave us knowledge that Pakistan is an agricultural country with the largest network of irrigation canals across the asian subcontinent. There was a time we use to had plenty of maize, wheat, rice, sugar cane from our own lands across the right bank of Indus. come mid 70s the land started to erode crops got infected and unknown botanical diseases made land masses vacant.
Instead of progressing forward and adopting high tech technology for improvement in agricultural & irrigation system the mafias focused on personal short term gains, policies to improve upon irrigation and agricultural development were set aside and issue made controversial.
Kalabagh which still is most feasibale largest area to store fresh water has been made controversial, now what we see, is fresh water getting wasted after floods crop gain depleting fast and soon we may face drinking water shortage.
thanks to Mr. Jamat Ali Shah the former Head of Indus water commission, now a canadian citizen with net worth of 7.35 Mil Can dollars he made deals with India for water rationing. while the politicians were busy in dog fights tearing each other apart one single dogy bureaucrate screwed the nations future.
no wonder in next 5 years time we as nation will be paying a Drinking Water Tax to India for schedule the timing to Opening Fresh water gates towards Pakistan
agriculture then can only be found in our own backyards producing Tamatar, mirch & peyaz, while importing other essentials through the eastern road border
