^This thing looks fatuous. Can it not simply fly like a proper helicopter and be content with it ? Look at those propellers (rotors?) in the picture with f-18; I think two of those blades combined would equal the length of f-18 !

It may look ungainly, but it offers performance like no other aircraft, helicopter or not.

Yes, given the number of roles it can adapt to, there's no denying its utility. It's also very expensive at nearly 69 million dollars in FY 2012 (by comparison the C-130H costed 30 million in 1998, which after adjusting for inflation equals approximately 42 million in FY 2012)
