Nissan has announced that the Renault-Nissan Alliance plant near Chennai, India, has begun commercial production of the new Nissan March/Micra.
The car, which will be called Micra in India, will go on sale in that market in July 2010, with bookings set to begin tomorrow, 25 May.
In a statement, Nissan Motor Company chief operating officer Toshiyuki Shiga said, "The start of commercial production of Nissan Micra is the beginning of a new chapter for us in India. In an exponentially growing and challenging Indian automobile industry, we are introducing a product that has been specifically designed keeping in mind the discerning consumer needs of India."
India will be the source of the V-platform-based vehicle not only for the local market, but also for export markets such as Europe, the Middle East and Africa, with export deliveries scheduled to commence in September 2010.
The V-platform will ultimately deliver three models. Nissan has confirmed that the second and third models will be a sedan and a compact MPV, but no further details have been announced. Nissan is expected to build models based on the V-platform in up to five locations, including a possible new plant. At this stage, Nissan has confirmed four plants: China, India, Japan and Thailand. With all five production locations operating at full capacity, the platform could deliver up to one million units annually.
