Bajaj Auto Limited has just pulled the wraps off the all new 2012 Pulsar, a decade after the first Pulsar twins were launched in India. Ever since, the Pulsar has received a rash of upgrades even as the basic design remained true to the muscular design that made the Pulsar so popular in the first place. The Pulsar is officially the largest selling budget sports motorcycle in the Indian market, selling many times that of its competition. The 2012 Pulsar 200 NS, like the first generation models brings plenty of innovations to the fore and will raise the bar yet again.

NS in the Pulsar 200 NS stands for Naked Sports, just like LS on the Pulsar 135 stands for Light Sports. The styling of the new Bajaj Pulsar features plenty of bits from the Pulsar 135, and looks sharper than ever before. The styling of the Pulsar is based on a typical streetfighter look, a look that might become a staple across the new Pulsar range with various engine capacities. The 2012 Pulsar uses a 200cc liquid cooled engine, that was closely developed with the Duke 200′s engine. The 200cc engine will produce a peak power of 23.5 PS at 9500 rpm and a peak torque of 18.3 Nm at 8000 rpm.

The engine is fed by a 32 mm carburetor, which seems like a move mainly to keep costs in check as fuel injection would be more expensive. The upside to this is that Bajaj Auto would be able to price the Pulsar 200NS super competitively, sending shivers down the backs of its competitors. The 200cc carbureted engine will endow the 145 Kilogram Pulsar 200NS with some very impressive performance numbers. 0-60 will fly by at 3.6 seconds while 0-100 will be achieved in 9.8 seconds, making the Pulsar 200 NS a very quick motorcycle indeed.

Top speed too is an impressive 136 Kph. The liquid cooled engine will use four valves per cylinder and come with not one, not two but three spark plugs, perhaps making it the first single cylinder motorcycle in the world to feature tri-spark plug technology. The bar definitely seems to have been raised, at least when it comes to spark plugs, that is. Bajaj also claims a phenomenal mileage of 58 Kmpl at a constant 55 Kmph, which is quite remarkable for an engine that is such a high state of tune. The Pulsar features a 12 liter fuel tank, the smallest ever in Pulsar history.
Some credit to that stellar claimed fuel economy number could be due to the 6 speed manual gearbox that the Pulsar 200 NS features. The 2012 Pulsar features a pressed steel, twin spar perimeter frame, much like the Yamaha R15. The 2012 Pulsar gets conventional double downtube front end suspension while the rear gets a gas charged monoshock unit. The 2012 Pulsar also gets a underbody exhaust just like the KTM Duke 200. Petal disc brakes at both front and the rear will handle stopping duties of the new Pulsar 200 NS.

Today’s event is a more of an unveil, highlighting the design and technology behind the Pulsar 200NS. Therefore, pricing hasn’t been announced today. The pricing announcement will come during the official launch of the Pulsar 200NS, which is expected to happen in April 2012. Rajiv Bajaj has meanwhile hinted at a price well under the INR 1 Lakh mark, which means that the Pulsar 200 NS will carry forward the Pulsar’s legacy of affordable performance.
