ok lately i have been switching gears from alpine type r to soundstream splx.
also 99% of the ppl on PW who own a low grade subwoofer, would be pioneer
98% of the ppl on pw who own a high grade woofer would be alpine type R.
and 99% Of the ppl on pw know that splx is a full grade spl sub.
so lets go own with the Head to head comparasion.
alpine type R are rated at 500wrms each. i was using solid audio 15D to power 2 12 @ 1ohms.
the enclouse used is 3.7cubic foot internal tuned 38hz and powered by 15D.
RESULT
The high notes are good and strong. and even with such high tuning, it can easily take out low notes. infact there is a contineous flow of bass and u will never feel too much peak or too much dip on the bass notes.
soundstream splx are rated at 750rms. i was using 2500D at .5ohms.
the enclousure was 3.68cubicfoot internal tuned to 38.58hz.
RESULT
splx is surely louder then the type r. the higher notes are wayy louder. the bass gives u an effect of a drum hitting hard near ur ears. but this doesnt make it the end of the world............ while it is louder , the dips and peaks are way beyond ur control. on one note u will feel it hits u very hard then suddenly the whole aura will fall down and then again its going to hit u hard. also while it gets loud, u can hear a very audible thump. the thumping effect increases as u increase the volume. the lows are not for splx. it doesnt hit as hard as the highs (again dips and peaks).
CONCLUSION
Alpine type r would probably take it with the lows and the overall sound.
soundstream can reach way beyond type r in the high notes (mayb a couple of dbs and i aint joking!!)
i will be expaning this thread after i play the Type r on 2500D @ 1OHMS....
stay tuned
p.s:-
with these two subs, i would like to add in the third contender , which would be the cerwin vega VMAX122.
tht sub sounds more like the splx but in a smaller version.
