That was an old initial CVT technology which had two step holding rpm CVT. Also there was (STARTING CLUTCH) Mechanism incorporated which over the time proved to be faulty having less life and pron to premature failures.
Now CVTs in Grande and X are modified with robust CVT belts, pullies and other components and working on (TORQUE CONVERTER) Mechanism with a programming to feel like ordinary Auto shifts.
Its now more than 11 years and CVTs being made and coupled with Autos are way more reliable than before.
The speed inceases with the rpm.
In Grande it mimics exactly like regular Auto shifts.
