Its a beast of an engine, no denying to that.. but the fact remains that american engines (or australian for that matter) have always been producing a very deep/raw/gruff/ and distinct exhaust note, even at idle speeds... on the other hand, european cars have always been a bit civil in this department..maybe partly due to the fact that they've been using butterflies (or something of the sort) for quite some time now in their exhaust systems to muffle the sound.. you can vary your car's exhaust note by the press of a button from within the car.. but i'm not a fan of such artificial arrangements.. even HSV here in Aus have introduced a bi-modal exhaust system as an option on their new range, but personally i feel that its just crap.. I like listening to pure V8 growl instead of some contrived sound. That department is better left for the ricers i guess.

euro V8s may sound good, but tell you what? they dont sound great!!

I know what European V8's you're talking about, but M156 sounds COMPLETELY different from them. Go to Holden and Chevy forums, M156 is what they want their engines to be. For the record, I'm big LS series engine fan.

Please enlighten me on this point. Which manufacturer was downsizing it's engine back in 2006? NO manufacturer was giving a damn about global warming back then. You sound like a hippie when you say "wrong decision". People who drive cars with these engines, loves them. Who are we to decide?

The newer BMW M5 F10 has already coming as a V8-TT. BMW Even dropped of plans to offer DCT in the F10 M5 due to cost concerns.

Jay Leno has planned to put this growling monster a.k.a M156 in a 1969 300SEL!!

isn't that also a lumina SS? my friend and his brother both have them in dubai, one with a sports exhaust and one without,... they don't come near the C63 in terms of aural pleasure,... but they are amazing bargain V8's!

I6 I believe. Some M3 purists weren't much in favor of a V8 in the M3. Of course I hated it because it doesn't have something called "toowrk", and without it a V8 is redundant IMO.

BMW's announced the 3.0L TT 740i for the US market. MB has to switch to forced induction to compete on the EPA numbers front.

Waisay I was against the 63 just because it was slower than the old supercharged 55 engines, but in essence these are the best AMG's since the mid '80s.

Lumina SS is a simple Holden Commodore.. the one in question being an HSV (Holden Special Vehicle) GTS, with improved suspension, better tuned engine, exhaust, bigger brakes/wheels and all that stuff... Although both the vehicles share the same zeta platform (the one also used in Camaro SS), HSV is more like an upmarket brand (just like a normal mercedes and its performance division AMG).. The equivalent of Lumina SS here is the Holden Commodore SS...
I've seen your friend's car.. I believe someone posted it here on PW, its black and its a commodore SS as far as I can remember..

HSV is only officially available in the UK as Vauxhall VXR8 (they do not build them in LHD version).. whereas the pontiac G8 in the US and the Lumina SS in the UAE are both effectively Holden Commodores, not HSVs..

New gen comes with LS2. Previous two gen came with LS1.

Lumina SS is a simple Commodore SS, it doesnt come with an LS series engine..
I did a bit of a search on google and found out that Holden is now even exporting LHD HSVs to the gulf region as CSVs (Chevrolet Special Vehicles) CR8 (stands for clubsport R8).. still not offering the GTS though in any of its export markets..

Storm's friend's car I've seen, and its clearly a Lumina SS (if its the same car his friend posted on PW a while back)... its not an HSV or CSV for that matter, so its clearly not having an LS series engine...

all new HSVs come with an LS3 now..

RB, Yeah all M156 comes in all 63 models. But Leno got M159 which came in SLS.

TE, I couldn't find more details on the internet to show you but here is a line from the following link "The Chevrolet Lumina SS has a 6.0-Litre V8 Corvette engine under the bonnet." Both SS and CR8 comes with LS2.
