Another Khyber Being Re Done

Thanks afatifa and all for encouraging me.

With its restoration many things have tightened their grip, we are working very hard in office on more than couple assignments to meet their deadline (cant take off from here) my right hand pain has started once again, On sunday i washed its dashboard and ac compartment duct compartment boxes, cleaned its door locks and door channels on monday had to go to doctor, he advised me complete rest, not even allowed to use computer (wrestling with a 24 years old rusted mean machine is out of question. My wife also accompanied with me to doc i couldnt understand the reason untill she started like a tape recorder (telling the doc about me "he is a smoker, spends most of his time on PC (God knows doing what) and to top it all like to operate anything that comes in his grip, he has made our home a workshop even our drawing room is littered with spare parts of car, and listens to no one)

Doctor along with medicine gave me bundle of advises.

Nah guys dont laugh its a serious issue. i am being squeezed in many things but Insha Allah will complete this car in a decent way.

Sir i really admire the effort you are putting. The denter is also doing good. You have replaced most of the metal parts. I had doubts that this is not going to come out good but your efforts have proven me wrong. Considering your health issue you have done a marvellous job. If you were healthy this would have came out even better. You converted a rust bucket into a useable car. Just one thing i wanted to say is that you should get the exposed metal cleaned and painted ASAP to avoid any serious rust taking place again. A hats off to you again. Really looking forward to its succesful completion. May Allah get you healthy and bouncing soon.

Saad i am so thankful to you for your kind words,

the fact is that its my hobby and i cant stay away from it, every time i see anything out of place in a car or bike my hand starts itching. what i have to go through for the sake of this hobby, is actually very interesting (thinking to start a thread about it also)

here comes todays updates

first four pics are to show you the condition of the roof you wont believe that three coats of paint remover were needed to get rid of paint and we were able to see the mounds of putty

back screen being removed to see if its holding area has rusted?

if offered some comfort since there was no major damage and boot lid was mostly in tact

paint remover applied and at last its steel was visible (peeled off the paint myself with a scraper, hand has started aching again)

gap between door and fender that the denter has promised to remove

Bumper was not fitting so this bumper base will be repaired tomorrow

as per the suggestion of many of you bonnet is purchased and i requested the denter to fit it so that i may be able to see it (how it looks like) perhaps you people have also faced the kind of look that was on his face on my request (that said grow up man) but he didnt utter a word from mouth and fit all these things on my demand

new bonnet has couple of dents and i will have to get it changed tomorrow

One more problem with its side Mirrors they can't freeze at one place they changes their direction i got new side mirrors of khyber but still same problem ?

You surely can get all these things from Karachi these parts are very cheap even in Gujranwala, but i wont suggest change of any metal part until absolutely necessary, Genuine metal sheet is of good quality and dents can be removed pretty easily i am not sure about quality of these things, but difference is so huge that i cannot afford good quality things (e. g. this bonnet cost me 2950 rs while good quality bonnet was for 6400 Rs) so far i have spent about 5000 on it using superior quality material it would have been well above 70000.

You should have its front suspension checked by some good mechanic it shouldnt behave like that even on 130 KMPH its a solid car and do not do so.

I am also very concerned about mirrors i have never seen its good quality mirrors, since you are in karachi you can get these genuine from second hand market. Other option is cultus mirrors. That i do not prefer personally want to restore it in its origional condition (nothing fancy will go on it)

And all guys denter is working hard and car hopefully will be handed over to me in next couple of days for paint job, it then when my job will start (have planned many things) so keep in touch.

Most people would normally not endeavour taking on such a project because of the massive buildup of rust and the teabag state but you appear to be brave enough to take on the challenge and seem to be going in the right direction which is commendable. I would advise you to get all the surface rust which has started to build onto the bare metal properly cleaned before starting the prep for paint. Painters usually tend to leave rust in hard to reach corners and paint over it which becomes a horror story after some time. For that, I'd suggest you to attach a wire brush extension to a grinder and clean the surface rust with that. Other than that, in the last picture that you posted, the front bumper appears to be deformed from one side or just needs to be adjusted. Please look into that aswell. i have experienced that rust issue before (got my previous car painted and within three months its rear wheel arch paint was destroyed due to rust) so when i took this task i was ready for the worst and maximum labor that it might require.

You are right about the bumper its base was taken out adjusted and bumper is fine now.

I have saved my energies for the time when denter lets the car go, i will clean it for the painter and will Insha Allah keep you people updated.

I have been waiting very keenly for denters job to finish as usual visited him today but my younger brother was also with me, just going through the work he pointed out difference between fitting of headlights, right side headlight is out of its holding area by more than an inch. to my dismay he was right.

Denter was told about it he also seems fed up of all this, he said it not a big deal it will be ok, I thought it wont be, i took the measuring tape and measure headlight's housing area from the fitting area of front shocks fitting area, there was difference to be sure i measeured it thrice but result was same (since we had changed housing area of both of headlights) that might have caused the difference in cutting the old ones and welding new. So denter is taking out all the things headlights bumper fender and doing it once again. I am very much disturbed since the weather is getting harder coming ramzan also i wanted to get it finished, my estimate is that the work has gone beyond schedule by at least three days. Do pray for me guys

being honest,,,,salam hay bhai aap k denter ko,,,else these denters i tell you...." bhai itna ho gya bht hay iss se zada ho bhi nahi sakta" every denter ive faced have same meaning in different ways of expressing.

Most would'nt even dare tinkering with a rust bucket like this, but you sir are a genius. Bravo & hats off to you for restoring an almost "hopeless" car to a respectable condition. No matter where you go, our Pakistani mechanics & denters are a bunch of lazy swines. Agar khud sir pay kharay ho kar kaam na karwao tou yeh aisi dandiyaan maarein k tauba.

Today my younger bro was with me and we had taken our cam today (previous pics are result of my LG cell phone's 5 MP cam) this is gonna be better.

And do suggest the wages. Initially denter had asked for 25 k, we told him that being too much (usual bargaining style) he said he would start the work and his wages may be decided later (whatever we would think fair) my idea was to give him 18 Ks, but it has been more than a month now that he is working on this dead body and i dont want to be unfair to him. So do suggest after viewing the pics.

Here goes the real stuff (In red and blue striped T shirt its me and was just getting the updates)

you can see now fitting of both headlights its almost perfect, ( there are many things still not perfect) but its result of using all the local parts and the car is very badly used and repaired. so that the maximum denter could do.
