Another solo trip - a tribute to KKH

Hope you are fine. I looked through your whole thread and found it very useful for someone new who wants to travel on kkh.

Please advice I am planning for khunjrab pass with my wife and seven month old daughter on honda civic 13 or city 15. Which car is more suitable and which way is suitable I mean babusar or kkh way. Also is attabal tunnel opened now?

Also on khunjrab pass is it hard to breath I have bp issues so asking.

With the news that remaining stretch of road leading to Babusar pass and tunnel/bridge on Attabad lake may be completed by this September, I decided to enjoy the sweet and sour Karakorum highway by driving from Lahore to its extreme end at Khunjerab Pass at 4,500m. I had traveled first time on KKH with my friend via NATCO in 1996, and this month after 20 years I set off on a long journey on my trusted Corolla considering that may be nobody will drive in the harsh Kohistan area after Babusar pass will become a highway. Once Attabad lake is bypassed by a tunnel, no one will dare a bit of adventure transporting his car on boat.

For the first time, I have also explored Ghizer district's Phunder and Yasin valleys. Got a bit inside Shandur area and returned back after about 15km as rightly advised by friends at Pakwheels that there is no acceptable track for a car. I also drove close to Wakhan corridor.

Ghizer district is the place where hundreds of soldiers are sleeping under flags of Pakistan.....the men who lost their lives protecting us, our kids and their future. Standing on top of the list is Lalik Jan "Nishan e Hyder".

For the benefit of Pakwheels gypsy community, I will share unbiased day by day report of my 2,980km trip..... just in case somebody may wish to try my experience. I will also focus on latest KKH road condition and security concerns in Kohistan while comparing with my KKH trips of 2012 and 2014. Public transport is still strictly crossing Kohistan area in day light, and a couple of months ago private vehicles were not allowed to cross Jaglot after 11 in the morning....this happened to my friend. This restriction has now been lifted.

I have been on this route KKH - Gilgit - Hunza - Khuanjarab - since 1988
have done it four times 1988 - 1994 2001 and now in 2015

First four times with Friends

and Now in August 2015 with 16 family Members

But to do it alone self driving great - Bravo - Stay Blessed

Can i go till Khunjrab Top (China Border) in my 2008 1000cc Vitz? Only 2 people will be going. Will it go till China border?

Why not? Just care for your car from Patan to Raikot bridge, very bad section and then its a breeze until Khunjerab.

Mine has company fitted 15inch rims so its has good ground clearance than other vitz. Ive read in several places that oxygen level drops when you are near khunjerab top so engine is doesnt runs properly... was worried if a 1000cc vitz would be able to climb till that place.

This is true at the time of final climb to Khunjerab. Car will feel heavy owing to lack of oxygen and nothing else.

Awais bhai, I was there in mid May, offseason and it appeared as if entire area was at my disposal. Still Hunza was hot during noon

And about the camera i got the same camera. As it got 30x optical zoom the image doesn't deteriorate until option zoom. Rest 30x is digital and that can be little pixalated. i keep it under 30x optical zoom and result is superb. here are some samples shots (normal and zoomed) from same camera from a last year trip to Soan Valley. You can see the boat clearly at 30x zoom

Very nice to read your excellent thread, I have been in Naran last year 2015, June, And this year I am also planning to visit the nothern areas till Khujrab with my family in Ramadan (June,2016) on my Cultus 1000cc.
Will it be good to travel this year in Ramadan and were there any difficulties to reach at Khunjrab for Cultus because of less oxygen??

Thank you brother for appreciation. Last month, I cancelled my family trip to Hunza owing to unexpected weather followed by flooding. I am so sad to report that newly built KKH from Raikot Bridge to Khunjerab is severly damaged at places. If I was at your place, I would have never considered taking a cultus (ground clearance) given the situation of highway. Rest it all depends if you dont mind some rattles here are there in the car.
