AoA. I have got Honda City ivtec 1.5 manual 2018. Had 3 months inspection and oil change today. The Honda Fort guys filled in 0-20 grade Genuine Honda Oil. My question is that is such grade suitable to 1.5 manual engine?

I was confused about this oil thing as I happen to own 1.5 City. So I contact my friend who works in Honda and also owns a BRV. As per him 0w20 is recommended for 1.5 Civic turbo, BRV and city 1.5. he is also getting some legendary fuel mileage out of his manual BRV. 16-18 on highway 14 in city.
The fact I am more worried is that I have had two oil changes uptill now and both were 5w30. Now changing to 0w20 would cause problems? And using 5w30 would have caused any damage to engine?

He also said using 0w20 will also increase your oil change interval to 10k instead of 5k

0w-20, 5w-30 and 10w-30 (max.) are the oil grades recommended by Atlas Honda Pakistan for use in its Honda vehicles, and for new Civic, BRV and Honda City (although I am a bit skeptical for City), 0w-20 is being poured.

I believe, there is no harm in using either 0w-20 or 5w-30 in new Civic, BRV or City, however, frequent switching between oil grades may be avoided. Either stick with 0w-20 or 5w-30, and use API SN / SN Plus / RC, ILSAC GF-5, Fully Synthetic engine oil, from any reputed brand. Just ensure that oil is 100% genuine and original. Change oil along with genuine oil filter after prescribed time interval, but no need to drag oil + filter unnecessarily.

Brother, I personally believe that 0w-20 and 5w-30 are irrespective of summers or winters only, or new engines or old engines only. They are more inclined towards OEM recommendations and specifications.

5w-30 "can be" said for summers, and 0w-20 for winters, or for new engine, pour 0w-20, and after 50-100,000 Kms, switch to 5w-30, etc. But not true.

If an engine has been designed and fully tested for 0w-20 and 5w-30, then pouring unrecommended and too thin or too thick engine oils (like 0w-16, 5w-16, xw-40, xw-50, xw-60, etc.) will prove dangerous and harmful for the engine in long run.

Similarly, if an engine like that of Suzuki Mehran is best suited for 10w-40, then pouring thin oils like 0w-20, 5w-20, etc. Will prove dangerous.

All engines have clearances. They are more in old engines / tech. And very small / tight in new and modern engines. So accordingly, extremely thin oils are unsuitable for old engines / tech. And thick oils are for new engines / tech. Respectively.

And... Another most important deciding factor for the use of thin oils in new and modern engines is fuel economy.

In any of xw-yy oil grades, "x" is related to ease in cold start-up of engine, and "yy" is related to oil viscosity / thickness at normal working engine temperature.

0w is the best regarding easyness in cold start up of engine. It will be very beneficial and helpful in winters (as friction will be min.) but equally helpful in summers too (It won't harm engine). So accordingly, 0w is better than 5w, is better than 10w, and so on, as far as cold start-up of engine is concerned. It will take less time for oil of 0w to reach engine internals than 5w, and then 10w, and so on...

Regarding "yy", it's the viscosity. 20 is less viscous than 30, 30 is less viscous than 40, and so on...

In a nutshell, it can be concluded that 5w-20 is more viscous than 0w-20, is less viscous than 5w-30. Similarly, 0w-30 is more viscous than 0w-20, is less viscous than 5w-30, etc. 0w-20 is the least viscous, and 5w-30 is the most vicious in all these 4 (considering all other parameters same).

If 0w-20 and 5w-30 have been written, then no doubt, 0w-30 and 5w-20 are also there and will definitely be there in Japan too, but if not clearly mentioned, then it's better to either use 0w-20 or 5w-30, as no one knows engine better other than the engine manufacturer itself!
