I keep reading this in threads that proper maintenance of cars dosent just require oil change. We have owned multiple cars now for short and long periods of time what exactly does proper maintenance consist of, I only own a manual for my motorcycle haven't consulted a car manual as of yet. But here's the things I did with our cars
1) alignment and tire maintenance
2)breaks with the disks being turned occasionally
3) coolant topping up ( although the level has always been maintained with no major loss of coolant like just a bit in a matter of months with recommended fluid )
4) oil changes with recommended oils
5) filters including AC
6) lights
7) belts when they got noisy
8) steering fluid leaked in my civic so that was fixed after the problem occurred
9) plugs

So what am I missing. What would include preventive maintenance.
I haven't gotten suspension work done much although I think one of our cars suspension is going a bit weak ? But it's still very comfortable and no noise but like a gut feeling that it's not as taut as it used to be. Mechanics say nothing is wrong which is strange cos they don't do any thorough checks.so what should be looked at.
Do modern cars require valve clearance adjustment ?

My passo had really bad fuel mileage 7/8 l/Km no one could diagnose the problem got the air sensor o2 sensor and everything checked with no luck now my uncles passo does the same thing. Really defeats the purpose of having the little car.

We have two similar Corolla fielders, one of them had a relatively loud idle noise with the AC on. It's not some thing in particular but the combination of the fan and compressor is loud.. It's still chilled so no cooling problems , just that it's annoying to know that something might be going wrong , I got it checked mechanics said its nothing just characteristic of this particular car .

I have a prado gx 1998 1kz-te with mannual transmission. So the problem is that when its going upwards on a slope and comes to rest it has extreme difficulty to get running again if I push it too much then it weakens and eventually shuts down. I mean its a prado and should'nt have any issues like this. What is the reason and how much will it cost to repair?

you will know when they are bad, they are the same kind of engine mountings that mercedes have been using since the mid 80s - rubber pucks with hydraulic function. In the old cars you would check with a 13mm rod and see if it could fit between the mount and arm. In new ones its not quite possible, so we just go by experience - meaning if your car is vibrating at idle and you feel too much torque movement in the engine - the mounts are not doing their job.

I have yet not determined any mileage - its mostly dependant on the model of your car and how you drive it.

sir i'm very happy to c someone with so much technical knowledge, and that too quite authentic. mashallah! you can always open a lecture theater and i'll be the first one to join if someday i can meet you i'd be glad.

i have civic 2004 auto with cng. lately i removed cng ventury n instead intalled the gas pipe directly on to the throat of the throttle body. is it fine or not? P.S. air intake blockage is in place relevant to the t-valve setting

disregard the above for a sec, lately the performance of the car has slightly decreased on petrol only + mileage has increased on both petrol and cng. how can i rectify the problem.
P.S. spark plugs are about 3 months old, air intake is cheap one about 2 months old though cleaned regularly, tappet checked found ok. someone suggested me to get the fuel pump checked. question is do our mechanics know any way of checking the pressure cuz i believe wherever i'll go ustaad will say "ye to khatam hogaya hy, kabli dalva lo"

Car is KIA spectra altered with Toyota 5a-fe
Toyota compressor is jammed so need replacement shopkeeper suggest me to add Terios Kid Compressor. Now iam confused to buy it
1.Is cooling will be good.
2.Compressor size mater ( i have seen the compressor which is small!)
3. Load on engine?

Please give me suggestion that i install it or not or other compressor..

if its the caliper pins that are bad

there are two or three ways to go around
you can have a machinist make you new pins, if the caliper is in good shape

machinist can also install teflon bushings to make the pins run tighter - not recommended

you will have to buy both calipers new or used in good condition

sylglide is not sold in Pakistan, you can however buy some silicone grease and use that to lubricate the slide pins, make sure that the little black rubber bushing on the caliper pin is not missing, gooey or enlarged, Also make sure the entire caliper is properly mounted.

caliper pins wears with time causing play and resulting in rattling issue .. in some cases pin hole in its housing expands .. permanent solutions would include new pins or coating the pins, like making slightly over sized pins or shimming the pins .. make sure that these solution do not cause pin to get stuck

One mechanic said like you. He said one solution to tighten the pin hole by add tiny strips made by x-ray film sheet. It will be save rather than coating pins / oversized pins. Bcoz sometimes oversized pins cause jamming breaks

you r welcome .. when u go for shimming then copper foil is a recommended option .. still any loose item like shim can bundle wrap if not properly placed causing improper braling .. a slightly oversized pin should do the job .. keep dia where u have play also ...... or ...... u can install copper bushes in housing body holes

Contacting you again for the same issue. Last time, i did the same old solution, only silicon greasing to pins. After that I found that main cause of this Rattling noise is continuous long drive of 200+ km. Previously I have doubt bcoz last 3 times, same problem came after long dive of 200+ km continuous.
This time after greasing, i went to another city very next morning and came back in evening (Total 400km, 200km-single side). and found that Rattling Noise come back.
Now mechanic suggested to add another rubber bushing at bottom of caliper pin. (the one which already have one rubber bushing at the tip). Image attached. As per mechanic, there is minor play in that pin only.
so plez suggest, should i add another bushing to pin or and any other solution suggestion?

the only solution is to change the calipers

the rubber bushing won't help

and, the pin with rubber bushing is always the lower one of the two pins

Thank you for the reply. There is no such vibration present while shifting the transmission or revving the engine. The car is a brand new Nov 2011 import with just 25K KMs on the odo, so i guess it is not that old.

However, i have a 2014 model (new one) Toyota Altis 1.8. It is a 6 speed manual transmission, and i now notice that when i put the transmission in neutral, for example when coming to a stop at a traffic light, there is some vibration that i notice wasn't there before. Does this mean the engine mounts are wearing out? This car has been driven 36,000KM in city.

if you have a mechanic that can adjust the bearing preload then go for it, but make sure the differential crown wheel and pinion are not worn down.

firstly - for the love of almighty dont just open up a dirty diff casing and put it on a dirt floor - clean it first and disassemble on a table. I dont know what they are calling polish on the crown wheel because it is a known fact that using synthetic gear oil will not show any mark on the crown or the pinion. Dino gear oil can show that. But as its just a picture without any other data like backlash or showing the position of the pinion with prussian blue - It cannot be determined if its bad just by this picture.

The two side bearings or the input bearing may be bad and causing the rumble. Did your mechanic check those for noise?

the bushing in the pin looks a bit beat up to me, does it easily slide in? Its supposed to be a tight sliding fit in the caliper, - you can test the pins by just pushing the pins in the caliper body - if they have side play, the caliper needs to be changed - I wont suggest you do any handiwork on the caliper as its a brake item.

Me and mechanic checked pin of my car carefully. Original pin have normal bushing and easily move in upper piston.
Yes, when we pull out pin half , it have slight side play. I am also in favour to change caliper but problem is that Caliper for Daihatsu Mira is not available in market. I am trying to search "Cabli" from old spare parts market

After zooming above pictures backlash marks is visible on both sides on crown teeth, mechanic point out these backlash and says that polish on crown is gone from both sides. Now the question is:

1) Are these visible backlash marks are normal?
2) These backlash causing rumble noise or bearing are the culprit?

I asked u about my radiator tank leak (plastic tank) and u said replacing the tank do not produce good results and its better to replaced the whole radiator.

I want to give tank repair a try,

1) is going for peetal tank a good option? What are the drawbacks?? He will probably weld the tank to radiator (he used the word tanka).

2) what if i unclamp the damaged area only and weld the plastic using solder iron?? I saw on youtube people repaired plastic tanks using radiator repair kits.

the radiator is made of nylon with glas fibers in it and that nylon goes brittle with age so if you unclamp it from the radiator there is a 80% chance the whole tank will break off from there.

The hand made brass tank that the radiator shop will make will be soldered to your radiator core. Its a good repair if done correctly and holds pressure perfectly.

Isnt radiator made of copper or aluminium??

I dont think repair guy will make his own brass tank. He says he will purchase from lorry adda, both brass tanks and desi plastic tanks are avalable there. Third option is famous bilal gunj of lahore if i want to purchase genuine plastic tank.

Other then leakage (which i hope will not happen) is there any danger of using brass tank?
