the chain can be checked in place by removing both tappet covers and lining up the crank pulley mark, The chain tensioner on the M112 is bad if its original - new replacement part is cheap and better. - you will need to tap it slightly with a lead hammer after install to let the ratchet catch release and push the chain rail.
If you are confused at the original timing marks - then remember that it takes 14 rotations of the crank for the chain to line up the original copper coloured links to the cams again.
btw - chain rails are available brand new, and they are not too expensive either, the whole rail/chain slipper package is about 200 euros, the tensioner is about 50. - all you will need is the toolset..
but if its just a small puff and not much oil usage and the fuel trims are normal too - leave it alone. It will probably run for another 200K like that.
btw - its not more than 2 or 3 hours to remove the engine from your car.
