Need some help here. We have a Probox (2nz-fe) and after using it for several years i feel it needs some work. For example, the engine is not as smooth as before, it vibrates sometimes, though not badly but it does that when you are standing in D, it gets pronounced when steering is turned and lights are ON. Same case when AC is switched ON. When the lights are ON and i roll down the window, the car takes load. What can i get done to bring back some smoothness to the engine. Also i have noticed reduced power. What things should i get checked/ cleaned/ replaced overall, engine, suspension etc as a part of major maintenance.

your corolla takes new shims to adjust the clearance.

I see. Will visit the workshop and tell them that. Is it a fairly simple job ?

no its not.

i doubt any workshop in Abbotabad will be capable of doing it.

masla ye hai, first you measure the clearance with feeler gauge, then you go buy a new shim to get the clearance in range.

shims are supposed to be available with toyota dealers, but mostly nahee hoteen. you have to find them from scrap and check manually with micrometer.

then the part to install it.

Desi mechanic will try to grind valve stems or shims to get clearance in range, then the engine will get noisy

I highly doubt mechanics here can do this all correctly. I know only one shop that is somewhat decent but even they, I don't know what they did but apparently the bolt to remove the throttle body is spinning freely inside and they have to remove it the hard and lengthy way. I can't trust them with such a complex job. I will be going to Lahore next month, maybe take it to Magna Tech for the job ?

No. Bring it to osama. He is the only guy i know, capable enough.

I can ask him, if we can pre arrange shims for your car. It depends on how hard it is to measure current clearances on your car.

Its even worse.

All z series toyota engines dont use shims anymore, toyota sell entire lifters in different thicknesses.

So expect a tappet job on this engine to be between 8 to 20k depending on how many lifters needed.

How to establish that the engine requires the job? What are the signs ? The symptoms i mentioned warrant such job ?

Measure the valve clearances by specified procedure. There is no shortcut.

Is there is a possibility that after measuring valve clearances we find it doesn't need the tappet job at all ?

Of course, as long as the clearances are within the specified limits, which happens quite often in well-maintained engines.

Has he tried getting info from deewan motors? Maybe they will give him info. Does he have the car manual.
