Kindly recommend me engine oil for my car...?
what if I change the engine oil...?

rest of details is following

Toyota Vitz
1.0
2014
76000km on ODO
Monthly running 1000-1600 Km
Area Peshawar. ( lowest temp in jan/dec is 2 °C and highgoes upto 48 °C in jun-aug.)

I bought the car two week ago
The previous owner of my car was using 20w50 grade. Well now I can switch it to the recommended one 5w30 or stick with the 20w50.

what if I change the engine oil.... will it harm the engine..? Smoke or knocking problem..?
and Please recommend which brand should I use...?

IMO, 5w-30 fully synthetic engine oil, from any of Shell, Total, Kixx, Caltex / Havoline, or even PSO, should work fine.

If it does not suit, and / or you face high oil consumption issues (or bluish smoke from the exhaust) then from next time, use 10w-30 by Caltex / Havoline.

If it also does not suit, and / or you face high oil consumption issues (or bluish smoke from the exhaust) then from next time, use 10w-40 fully synthetic engine oil by ZIC.

(Although in your case, I would sincerely recommend that you start in the reverse order, and not make straight jump from 20w-50 to 5w-30, rather in gradual steps, i.e. 1st 10w-40, then 10w-30, and lastly, 5w-30, and then finalise the grade which suits the best! )

Whichever brand or grade you choose, just ensure that oil is 100% authentic, and change oil + oil filter after every 5,000 Kms / 06 months whichever comes 1st.

If oil level drops in-between, then you may simply top it up.

Well, any particular reason, that why he was using this much thick oil? Was it for covering something up?

If engine health and compression are perfect, and you are not facing any oil consumption issues, etc., then you may switch to 5w-30, however, as I have stated above; switch gradually and in steps instead of making straight jump to 5w-30, to be on a conservative side (20w-50 ---> 10w-40 ---> 10w-30 ---> 5w-30)

Well, if you'll proceed in steps, then IMO, you will be safe.

I was having No idea like previous owner told me that, and Also toyota workshop, they both me to put 20w50. I told them to put 5w30. but the toyota guy and the manager over there told me that its to risky, engine will smoke and will knock,
than I told them why...? they just said that because climate is hotter in pakistan, and we are regularly putting 20w50 grade in all other cars vitz altis etc..
And that was my first oil change so thats why...!

YES. It can happen (I have also mentioned such concerns above), but only if engine and its compression are weak.

If engine is strong and healthy, then IMO, nothing bad will happen on downshifting from 20w-50. Just downshift in steps, to be on a safer and conservative side.

As far as knocking is concerned, I think its related with the fuel quality, spark plugs, etc.. To me, it does not seem to have anything with the engine oil.

For locally assembled PKDM cars, it can make sense, but for used JDMs, it seems quite thick.

Still, you may try downshifting as I have mentioned above, but if you are comfortable with 20w-50, and car is working absolutely fine on it; you do not feel car as "Ghutti Ghutti, Dabbi Dabbi", etc., and fuel efficiency is also Great, then you may keep on using 20w-50.

If not comfortable with it, then for sure, you may downshift, but in steps.

I think no need to change engine oil just right now, if you have changed it 02 days ago. If you'll change it now, then it'll be a waste of money and resources IMO (however, from next oil change, i.e. after 5,000 Kms, you may do it).

YES. And stick with the grade which suits your vehicle best. (be it 5w-30 or 10w-40, etc.)
