Auto vs Manual Transmission

I am not sure whether this topic is discussed before, but for the sake of knowledge, is it correct that auto transmissions are more fuel efficient than manual transmission.

I am planning to buy Toyota SE Saloon 2004 model, but confused to go for auto or manual transmission. (Do not want CNG car.)

So friends please advise which transmission will give better fuel average.

in most cases a Manual will give better Fuel Economy compared to automatic specially if the automatic is 4 Gear

reason being the transmission uses a wider RPM range for all 4 Gears
while on Manual u can Shift up to keep the car cruising between 2000-2500 RPM for better fuel economy

with tht said i cant say for sure how much fuel u will save but Automatic certainly has its advantages and it makes for very convenient driving specially for ppl with long daily runnings

For less price, more resale, better economy, more pickup, go for manual

For comfort, go for auto/prosmetic

Dear brothers
i have both auto IDSI and Manual IDSI cities .as far as the fuel economy goes i used to do 160-165 kms on petrols in 1000RS when the fuel price is 74Rs per liter My route consists of highway and both city in my expereince the auto expereince is more like systematic response to a drivers input of throttle u see large variations in the pick up specially during overtaking also bro u can manage 2-2.5 RPMS in auto transmission thing is the sensor installed for gear changing detects the actual torque X the factory settings so its not about RPMS its abt following the sequence as afar as manual is concerned both having the same capacity engines 2005-2006 the performace wise IDSI in manual is far better as there is no jerk and fuel economy is 10% more in manual .

PS by the way the Auto is more efficient during highway drive

@poster auto tranny will give u lesser mileage but youll love the drive.if u want economy and power then go for manual car.otherwise auto is better.i used to have 04 se saloon auto and i loved its drive.

^ yar bhai City uses 7Speed CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission)
thts why u r able to manage 2-2.5K RPMs on it

Toyota Corolla uses a traditional 4 Speed Auto and will shift up after crossing a fixed RPM

Sir go for an A/T, it is best for Karachi regardless of CNG or Petrol.

IDSI was using CVT, that was a whole different story, it uses a continuous gearing or pulley or teeths whatever you call them and definitely have a rubber band effect, much noticeable after driving a PROSMATEC or a stick shift.

The new City A/T has a much improved power train with a 5 speed conventional clutch transmission with a torque converter.

For cities like Karachi A/T is much more reliable as 80% of the 2003-5 Corollas and Civics I have driven have a messed up clutch and shifter.

se saloon auto will give you 8-10 km/liter in city and it will be less than what u get from manual gear car. On highway mileage is almost same....
In todays rushy traffic auto is a must and no issues of reliability auto is as reliable as manual gears......
money you pay for petrol will definatley pay u back in form of convenience

as an owner of 05 civic prosmatic , i can tell you guys that automatic is very convenient in all conditions whether driving in cities , highway or hilly areas. there is no reliability issue. i haven't noticed any low fuel economy . fuel economy depends on at what rpm you change gear, you can control it by how soft or hard pedal is pressed. my car is on cng and i don't have any issues . However i dont recommend CNG for cvt type cars.

my dad owns a corolla se saloon 2004 in auto transmission.. excellent car.. gives around 350 kms on full tank of petrol (80% ac is used).. dont know if the average is fine or not.. but the drive is very good and comfortable especially in the traffic of karachi... if you want to go for an se sallon, go for auto transmission.. it has less resale but no doubt a good car

manual consume less fuel compare to auto on both petrol, cng and diesel but riding a manual is fun and auto is comfortable.
with manual you can have full access to your car , one of the biggest some time with me is pedal error means instead of brake you hit accelerator but with help of clutch you can prevent it from accident and hit brake immediately.
i would suggest you go with manual once you got used to it you will not like auto again
