high rpm = more hp to climb a mountain etc. shifting to OD while climbing uphill is not good.
same case when you have to do double shot overtake maneuvers on highway, you want to keep it in 3rd gear to keep up the juice and power. (you need all the help from your tiny engines)
Overdrive is now a very weird term and not used for final gear, e.g. ZF 8 spd auto in new BMWs - has 2 overdrives, 7-8 are overdrive gears. The Toyota 8 sped auto also has 2 overdrives.
GM 10 spd automatic has 3 overdrives, 8-9-10 are overdrive gears.
