Automatic Transmission: Honda City 2015

I am new to Automatic transmission and wondering if someone can help me what's meant by D, D3, D2 and D1?

Yesterday, I drove my Honda city around the salt mines at D but it was struggling while stepping up. I have heard to shift to D1/D2/D3 but not 100% sure. Can i do it while driving and what will be their function?

Looking forward to a valuable advice.......

Can I shift to D1, D2 or even D3 while driving on D OR do I need to stop first to shift around these?

the number shows the lower gear number car will be locked upto
like D1 is 1st gear
D2 is second and so on

Has anyone tried to lock up around salt mines on M2 OR usually drive on D?

What's recommended?

D1 cannot be shifted without complete stop....
