BMW E30 engine swap.....experts plz?

hey everyone,

well I am intersted in getting this E30 316i, however its engine seem to be worn out and has some issues with the gear as well.

so can I find a good condition 318, 320, 325 motor with Manual gear in Pakistan?

if not...

since we have most of the JDM engines available here.....which motor would be the best swap....considering its tranny would fit as well?

I know its engine bay is pretty big and can fit alot of toyota engines....but which tranny would fit?

thirdly....which is best shop in isb/rwp for bmw.....mechanics and the spares shop?

i am sure there are people over here who gonna reply to what ever you have asked.

but just my experience and research on this car says, beside eng. & eng. parts body and suspension parts are also somewhat hard to find and very expensive in Pakistan. (yeah, if you have someone living in Dubai, things would be easy).

by the way finding a rear right light of that car is a very big task over here

You can find a good engine from here, most recently a friend of mine bought a 316i engine for an E36 for about 25'000 from Peshawar.

You can go see an engine in Pindi (Gowalmandi) from an 318ti (E36 compact) complete with auto tranny and DOHC 134hp engine. The guy is asking 200'000 for the complete cut piece.

Other modifications I've seen on BMW's are Toyota Supra 6 cylinder engines as they are the best fit for the e30/e36.

There's gearboxes available at Peshawar, a friend recently came back and showed me pictures of a ZF gearbox, don't know how much it costs though.

My recommendation would be to fix the old engine, you can get rings/headgaskets easily from Pakistan and you can get the transmission repaired, just have a mechanic check what the problem is. Sometimes it's a small issue like a hydraulic clutch.

Best workshop would be someone who is known to you. BMW's are well engineered and simple machines to work on, if you want to go to a specialist, spend money and go to Dewan in I-10 or go to G-8 Sarya Chowk, there is a good BMW/Mercedes Mechanic there. Spares are available in Pindi from Zeeshan Auto's (behind bhau mahala).

really appreciate ur detailed input....you are probably right about fixing up its own motor....apparently i heard "Crank noise" and noise of its differential.....so may be it can be fixed....will ask the workshop u have mentioned.

about the swap....i will check a manual gear bmw motor in pindi......

however can u confirm that would the trannys of motors like 1jzge/sr20det fit?

i thought you were talking about a maroon color car, that is one good car.

my research say keeping only one such car at a time is good enough (i owe a vw golf).

my experience is that the parts is not an issue. if u don't find something here, there are some parts guys who'll get u anything u need from Dubai etc.

OptimusSS! Rightly said. But I think, that things for you people over there in Karachi are much easy (finding parts for such cars) Over here in Islamabad/Pindi it is a very different story.

from what ive seen if u get to the right guy n tell him the parts u require, hell contact his friend over at dubai wholl send it in their baggage with anyone whoes comming to ur city. but if u require large body parts thats a different case.

Mohsin, maybe you could show me the car and we can figure what needs to be done in the motor, usually the 316i has a unique sound (noise) which may not be very harmful.

Regarding your question, a have not heard of a toyota gearbox being fitted to a BMW, all toyota engines I have seen use the BMW gearbox. Even the Corvette ZR6 engine fitted in E36/E30's uses bmw gearbox OR the original chevrolet corvette gearbox.

Again, regarding parts, Dubai is an excellent option, so is the UK, I order most parts online from www.pelicanparts.com they have everything BUT nowadays duty is about 50% on parts. You can e-mail me and I will send you my contact details, would love to help a fellow BMW owner any time.

Again my recommendation is to keep everything on the car original - the cost associated with toyota petrol and diesel engines will probably be the same as sourcing original parts for BMW or getting kabuli BMW engine and tranny.

^ even in dubai not all parts are avaliable off the shelve, some parts will have to ordered from D.

e30 is not any bigger than corolla. so fixing in 1jz will ruin some car.

go for 4 cylinder engine. nothing japanese is bolt on in german car.

and stay within the horssepower handling limits of e316 as designed from factory, yr not swaping engine in m3.

you will have brake problems and handling problems if all upgrades are not fixed in 316 which are in m3

I know about the whole power to body thing:)...am not really looking for a power house either.....i just wanted to know abt the trannys fitting.....even if i do go for a swap ....i will keep things in check... besides E30(non-M3) also comes with 325i which is a straight six....so it can easily handle decent power

time to get off from the boosted world for a while ....hopefully i can get this "moder classic" going...

i meant the chassis strenghting eqt in 316 and 325 varies.
driven both cars so that's how i know.
not testing yr knowledge of bmw. as for transmission of 1jz, car has to modified for it.

my cousin asked me the same question abt 2 months back and i suggested the same to him too

bro u can put in ijz or ijzgte 2jz or 2jzgte inline 6 engine or in small ones u can go for 4ag st or bt or 3sge i have done all these swaps in bm 316 but i am sitting in karachi. and if u need a rebuilt engine for 316 or 318 with manual tranny contact me Rahim 021 2067570

E30 is now bacoming a classic Restore the original engine, I would suggest. Parts can be made available as there are shops available.
