Salam
Started a thread about my BMW (here: https://www.pakwheels.com/forums/members-member-rides/204472-budget-classic-my-518i-edition-e28), thought I should share the very few pictures I have of my CRX back home in Oslo as well.
- 1,6 l. 16V
- 1992 model
- 175.000 km
- Modifications: *Drop *Full exhaust + air filter *Low profile tires *CF film on bonnet and rear spoiler (all unknown brands, all were done before me)
- About 140 hp now, originally 124 hp or something
- Weight about 940 kg. (according to registration papers)
I just recently bought this car (2-3 months ago) on pure impulse. I love my BMW but it's in no way an exciting car to drive - having owned an MX-5 I missed that pure, simple, high-revving motoring fun again.
Just had some cash laying around and this car showed up in the local ads literally 5 minutes away, so I had to take a look. At a decent price (I don't think any other desirable fun car was in the same range), and with newly serviced engine (timing belt etc.), it was a no brainer. It has been utterly reliable, but with an engine check light and a minor squeek when turning the wheel - both issues will be adressed ASAP. Right now it's in its garage spot resting - this is a horrible, horrible winter car so I'll do slides in the BMW instead.
I don't know what to tell you about the driving experience, but there are a couple of things:
1) Holy crap the rev needle just FLIES above 4000 rpm! So much fun. Full throttle from stationary, wheelspin, needle flies to 5000+, wheels get grip, reaching 50 km/h in something that feels like 3 seconds, noise starts to gather attention, shift to second, rev needle drops to 4500 rpm, you're good for acceleration up to 90 km/h, 7500 rpm, bare and almost non-isolated interior makes road noise and adds to the drama, check if the road stretch ahead can handle more speed, if so; shift to third, keep pushing, bam! 120 km/h in what feels like no time (meaning there's action from 0-120!). Wipe grin of face, brake down to 4000 rpm in first gear, do it all over again and again until you realize you just spent half your weekly gas budget for the car within an hour.
Park the car, get out thinking "God, this thing is sitting low", look at it, SMELL how hard the engine has worked, smile thinking it's yours, close the doors, turn around for one last look.
2) I am TOTALLY sold on low hp, and super lightweight cars for public roads. I don't live in Germany, but I have driven there. That's about the only country (along with Italia and Poland) where it makes sense to have 400+ hp super saloons. But on 98% of the roads, all you want is simple fun - good handling, sportscar drama, responsive engine and just enough punch. This car lets you push it a notch over what's considered safe speed (IMO of course), but it doesn't put you in the danger zone.
3) It's a beast in the rain. No electronic help, along with FWD and very rev happy engine, it can be quite a handful if you try to accelerate out of corners in the wet (you'll just go straight forward).
4) I hate, hate, HATE FWD cars, but the rest of the package is so awesome that I let it slide in this case!
5) Don't even get me started on the noise it makes in the tunnels. Sunroof back, windows down, rev needle high up in the range... Cars in the passing lane move when the noise sweet spot comes

Feel free to comment.
Sincerely,
Adeel
Ps. I am totally aware of the hideous 17" wheels that came with the car. Those beat the whole purpose of low weight fun. I'm going to buy 16" lightweight Japanese wheels when spring comes! Maybe even upgrade the brakes but that will be decided after my first trackday
