Buying a used car, when to pay money?

I am going to be buying a used car from someone who is in the business but does not operate a showroom. A hobbyist, so to speak. Looks decent and non-scammer and has his cars parked at home. However, I want to make sure I am keeping all bases covered.

So, he has said that you can give the check and take the car and give photocopy of NIC and they will do the transfer and give me papers once done. During this time, I can take the car with me and drive as I please. There is a number plate on it already.

Apart from getting a signature on a photocopy of the check, do I need to get anything else from him? I don't believe the car is in his name.

Stamp paper for the sale and try to hold some amount till the time you get the car transferred on your name and the requisite papers.

Don't. Ask him to show you documents first before finalizing the deal. This seems fraud.

ask to view & check all documents in original. DO NOT PAY ANY AMOUNT without viewing documents.
1. Registration book
2. Name of owner & the cnic number on book
3. engine & frame number over the invoice ( as per copy in file )
4. engine & frame number shall be identical physically over the vehicle as it is over the invoice

Go to excise office, show documents there when everything is okay make file and ask them to transfer on your name, When you have transfer letter in hand ask your guy to get cash/cheque cashed/deposited in nearest bank.

Thats how i sold recently as i did not intend to give car on open letter.

Other method is verify documents give half payment and when its transferred give remaining.

Usually its no problem, if trusted/reputable dealer is involved. See car documents pay cash/cheque drive off he gets documents sorted

Brother, I would recommend to move in following order:

1. First check and verify all the documents, especially from the Excise Department! They must be clean in all respects, and vehicle must be in the name of the person from whom you are buying your car. If its on open transfer letter, I would suggest to leave it, despite being comparatively cheap from the market and tempting, ya khwaa current owner kuj b kahay, that I will manage the owner at the time of transfer, etc. It seems easy and tempting at first, but can land you in much khwaari and khajalat if later ON, any sort of issue arises regarding transfer of ownership.
2. Before buying the vehicle, get it inspected by Pakwheels carsure service for complete condition of the vehicle. I think, Pakwheels team can also check documents.
3. Also get the vehicle verified from Police department, in case, it has any record regarding loss, theft, etc. or any malicious activity.
4. Do not pay in cash! Have the bank draft / payment order / demand draft / banker's cheque, etc. or any other safe and secured, verifiable mode of payment, prepared in the name of current owner only! and only hand it over at the time of transfer of vehicle. Do not hand it over early. For his satisfaction, you can send him copy of the bank draft and ask him to verify, or you can take him to bank and have the draft prepared in his presence.
5. When everything is done and verified, take the car and owner to the excise department, have the vehicle transferred in your name and hand him over the payment order. Afterwards, take charge of the vehicle, drive him to his place and drop him there, but on the way, have a cup of tea / coffee with him at a reasonable Cafe' just as an act of kindness!

As per my understanding, above seems to be fair and transparent steps regarding buying a vehicle and having it transferred in your name.
