Calling all camera experts: DSLR camera suggestions

Nikon D7100
Nikon D5500
Cheaper but equally good D5300 (i have this one)

It greatly depends the quality of glass you want to put on the camera, most professional cameras are cheaper ($2500-$4000) when compared to the high end glass 200mm F/2 $5.5k and these are just the portrait lenses.

I highly advise you to consider the glass first, body comes second, for basic family portraits and facebook dp's a 600d with a yongnuo 50mm will WOW the shyt out of your friends but i strongly suggest you donot care about this stuff and pursue and improve your photography skills in general. Creativity trumps equipment.

My first camera was D5200, it is very good aps c format camera. Has sharp images, works really good with kit lens also if some wants better then move to 18-200mm. One prime should be compulsory, 50mm f1.8g. Now using D7200 its also very good camera. Lens matter alot, investing in bodies is right to some extent but investing in lens is more important.

Agree lens excellent investment as they keep their value camera bodies go obsolete but lens can be reused on new camera bodies I have a Nikon d810 with 50mm 1.4 also 85mm 1.4g and a 16 - 85 kit lens it well worth your while to invest in prime lenses they are worth it

50 mm on a crop body is never the right choice.

go for 35mm atleast.

Go for D5xxx series. D5100 or more would suffice for a great starting point. Not sure about the price. If ample funds are available, upgrade the kit 18-55 to 18-105mm.
